Jets' QB drama: Sam Darnold would 'embrace' competition from rookie

1. Darnold vs. Wilson? Former Jets quarterback Josh McCown couldn't help but laugh at how the narrative surrounding Sam Darnold has changed. Noting the fickle nature of the NFL, McCown told ESPN this week, "Three years ago, it was 'Suck for Sam.' Now it's, '
Sucked for Sam.'"
The past three seasons have stunk for everybody connected with the Jets, and that's one of the reasons Darnold could be replaced by a rookie, presumably BYU's Zach Wilson. McCown, who became a mentor to Darnold in 2018 and has remained close with him, believes the Jets would be wise to keep him. He feels Darnold would thrive in a stable, quarterback-friendly environment, something he hasn't had.

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- A look at what's happening around the New York Jets:
1. Days numbered?Sam Darnold's chances of returning in 2021 seemed to improve with the hiring of coach Robert Saleh, who spoke of the quarterback in glowing terms (privately to friends as well). Now, 46 days before the 2021 NFL draft, those chances appear to be fading.
General manager Joe Douglas all but posted a "For Sale" sign when he recently admitted he is open to fielding trade inquiries. Since then, nothing has changed with regard to Darnold. The Jets are listening. This month, Douglas will be a fixture on the QB/pro day circuit. It kicked off Friday at North Dakota State, where he scouted Trey Lance, a likely top-10 pick.

DAVIE, Fla. -- The Miami Dolphins defense attacked offenses with a confusing, blitz-happy and man-heavy scheme throughout the 2020 season. But the lasting memory for that unit is its Week 17 loss in Buffalo when Bills quarterback Josh Allen and the starters played only the first half, yet the Bills put up 56 points.
Despite spending parts of the season with the No. 1 scoring defense, the Dolphins aren't a finished product. While still the strongest part of a young team, Miami's defense can use that Week 17 blowout as fuel to avoid complacency and add more sideline-to-sideline playmaking speed and elite pass rush.

Doesn't mean that won't change if one of those calls turns into something more.
And it doesn't mean the Broncos won't pursue a quarterback with the No. 9 pick. It's just that a pursuit of the best quarterbacks in this draft will likely happen well before the No. 9 pick rolls around and anybody picked after will need plenty of work to even push for the team's backup spot.

1. Weis loves Mac: The last thing former New England offensive coordinator Charlie Weis wants to do is preach to the Patriots about what they should do at quarterback this offseason. In his trademark blunt way, he characterized it this way: "I don't want to be one of those people telling them how they are dumbasses if they don't do that."
With that context, Weis, who coached in the team's first three Super Bowl championships, is high on Alabama's Mac Jones as a great fit.
"What are the two most important components of a star quarterback? They have the 'it' factor. And they're accurate. That's who he was," Weis said.
