Cameron McGrone could be the next Michigan linebacker on the Patriots' radar

Card image cap

2020 stats: 5 games (5 starts); 26 tackles (2 tackles for loss); 0.5 sacks
Size: 6007, 234 lbs, 77 1/2 wingspan, 32 1/8 arm, 9 1/4 hand
Workout numbers: 20 bench press reps
Expected round: 3rd
: N/A
Strengths: If you had to draw an inside linebacker from scratch, chances are he would look pretty similar to McGrone. He has some good size to play the position and also offers the range teams want from their off-the-ball personnel. McGrone is a fluid lateral mover capable of making plays all over the field, who also possesses the instincts and football intelligence to recognize plays and attack down the hill versus the run.
In general, he showed some good development in this area and became a better processor through his college career at Michigan. This also is on display when used as a pass rusher from the second level: McGrone knows how to time his blitzes and find holes in the offensive line to get into the backfield, and also has shown an ability to shed blocks and take advanced angles. He also makes his presence felt on contact and is a technically sound tackler who is not afraid to lay the wood.

Updated Needs for Every NFL Team Entering 2021 NFL Draft

A lively debate ensued on social media in recent weeks (what's new?) over the viability of taking one position over another high in the draft.
The topic centered on whether the Cincinnati Bengals should select the top offensive tackle or wide receiver with this year's fifth overall pick
Whichever way a person leans in this particular discussion doesn't really matter, because the truth is the team needs to address both positions. It's not an either/or situation.
The conversation serves as a microcosm of what every organization is currently contemplating.
Even with the opportunity to address problem areas through trades and free agency

The Patriots roster had plenty of holes at the conclusion of the 2020 season.
In paying free agents $159.6 million in guaranteed money — an NFL record — Bill Belichick patched a number of them and certainly didn’t just skimp with some FlexSeal. Still, there are positions that could used a boost in this month’s draft too.

MIAMI, April 7, 2021  /PRNewswire/ --
XSET, the world's fastest growing lifestyle gaming organization, and multi-award-winning Puerto Rican singer/songwriter Ozuna announced today a groundbreaking and wide-ranging new partnership, which includes making Ozuna a managing partner in XSET, becoming the first Latin artist esports team owner.
Since his breakthrough in 2016, Ozuna is one of Latin music's most iconic and listened-to artists worldwide. In his short career, he has received numerous accolades and recognitions, including winning the 2020 BMI Latin Award for Contemporary Song of the Year with "Taki Taki" and then again just this year, winning BMI's Contemporary Latin Songwriter, for the second time. He has developed a devoted global following of over 43 million fans across social media worldwide, and has collaborated with some of the biggest names in Urbano music, like Daddy Yankee and Nicky Jam, as well as such globally acclaimed megastars as DJ Snake, Cardi B, Selena Gomez, Post Malone, Jennifer Lopez, Snoop Dogg, Tyga, and Sia, among many others. Ozuna has appeared in major films, including the recently released "Tom & Jerry," and will be seen in the upcoming F9 ("Fast and Furious 9"). Not only did Ozuna's musical talent and film work attract XSET, his natural entrepreneurial instinct, vibrant creativity, and sweeping vision for international gaming lifestyle was a major factor in cementing this partnership.

NFL mock draft: Sam Darnold trade shifts QB focus in top 10 picks

3. San Francisco 49ers (from Houston Texans via Miami Dolphins) – Justin Fields, QB, Ohio State: The real mystery of the draft begins here, as it's anyone's guess as to whether coach Kyle Shanahan and GM John Lynch favor Fields, Alabama's Mac Jones or North Dakota State's Trey Lance. For as much buzz as there has been around Jones for this spot, Fields still sizes up as the best and most reasonable option. Armed with pinpoint accuracy and an aggressive-but-calculated mindset, he can unlock new dimensions for Shanahan while still playing under control.
4. Atlanta Falcons – Kyle Pitts, TE, Florida: Let the trade speculation begin. With two of the top remaining quarterback prospects still set to be on the board here, the Falcons can try to find the highest bidder if they're not determined to grab one of the passers – he likely would be bound to sit behind Matt Ryan for two years – for themselves. If Atlanta holds tight, however, it might be drawn to Pitts, the rare tight end who could become the focal point of a passing attack. Few coaches would be able to match Arthur Smith in devising a game plan for such a mismatch-creating threat, and his arrival could help the offense prepare for its eventual post-Julio Jones future.

Fast receivers, a loaded crop of quarterbacks, pass rushers who can fly off the ball -- the 2021 NFL Draft class has everything. And with the New England Patriots holding their best draft pick in a decade, this year’s top pick could wind up having a huge impact.
It’s with this in mind that I must slam on the breaks to make sure that everyone is wearing their seatbelts. Sure, it’s entirely possible that Bill Belichick loads up a bunch of future draft picks to trade up for a quarterback. Heck, there are mock drafts that have star receivers falling right into New England’s laps at No. 15.

NFL Notes: Where will Trent Brown fit?

Card image cap

Copied!
While the San Francisco 49ers brass tries to figure out its next move with regard to Jimmy Garoppolo, the Patriots can't afford to sit around waiting. Perhaps Garoppolo will indeed be traded, maybe even to the Patriots, but until then there's plenty to be done as the draft is approaching quickly at the end of the month.
For New England, the three-day selection process will likely take on a much different look than it appeared at the end of the season. Bill Belichick's free agent spending spree has impacted the roster on many levels, and some areas that may have deemed top priorities likely are now on the back burner.

The Joe Will Mock Draft 2.0
The 2021 NFL Draft will take place on Thursday, April 30, and with it being less than a month away I’ve decided to release my mock draft 2.0
My mock draft 1.0 was challenging due largely to the fact that free agency hadn't started, but with the dust settling and many of the top names already signed to their new teams, we have a clearer picture of what may happen in a few weeks.

In the immediate aftermath of last Friday’s blockbuster trade between the San Francisco 49ers and the Miami Dolphins pundits were quick to declare various “winners” and “losers” of the trade. The 49ers, paying a premium to come up nine spots in the first round, were still declared winners, given they are now in position to grab perhaps one of the top quarterback prospects. The Dolphins were also considered winners, given the accumulation of future first-round selections.

The Miami Dolphins are not yet done with making trades in the 2021 NFL Draft. At least, they are not according to ESPN’s Todd McShay. A week after the Dolphins shook up the first round of the Draft by trading back from the third-overall position to the 12th slot, a move made with the assistance of the San Francisco 49ers, then immediately Miami moved that 12th pick to the Philadelphia Eagles for the sixth-overall pick, McShay has Miami moving again in his 2021 NFL Mock Draft 2.0.

2021 NFL Draft: First-round order, top five needs for all 32 teams

Biggest needs: OL, EDGE, TE, CB, DL
GM Chris Ballard has added depth to the offensive tackle position since LT Anthony Castonzo announced his retirement after the season, but he should still be in the market for a potential long-term answer on the blind side. On the other side of the trenches, the team's young edge rushers have failed to break out thus far, which is why Ballard could go back to the well again in 2021.

Michigan's Kwity Paye is one of the most intriguing pass-rushing prospects available in the 2021 NFL Draft. Though the class lacks the top-level star power we've seen in recent years, there are plenty of first-round talents on the board.
Paye certainly fits that description. He doesn't have eye-popping production, with 11.5 sacks through four collegiate campaigns, but his athleticism makes him look capable of doing more. He put that on full display at his pro day, running a 4.52 40-yard dash while measuring in as a 6-foot-2, 261-pound DE.

Dolphins' Long-Haul Rebuild Should Make Miami an AFC Force for Years to Come

Card image cap

Brett Carlsen/Associated Press
There hasn't been a team in the NFL that has done more moving and shaking in the first round of the draft over the past few years than the Miami Dolphins.
Back in 2019, general manager Chris Grier conducted a fire sale of sorts, trading veteran assets like safety Minkah Fitzpatrick and offensive tackle Laremy Tunsil in an effort to accumulate draft capital. The following year, that haul helped to bring in a trio of potential impact players in quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, offensive tackle Austin Jackson and cornerback Noah Igbinoghene.
In 2021, Grier appears to be doing a bit of both, first dealing the third overall pick in this year's draft to the San Francisco 49ers, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. He then moved back up to sixth overall in a trade with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Minnesota on Saturday agreed to a one-year deal with Xavier Woods worth up to $2.25 million, according to NFL Network. Woods is expected to start at safety opposite All-Pro Harrison Smith.
Woods ranked 83rd on
The Athletic’s free agent big board. After the Cowboys drafted him in the sixth round in 2017, he served as a full-time starter for three seasons. In 60 games with the Cowboys, Woods intercepted five passes and recorded 28 pass breakups.

Sammy Watkins leaves Chiefs for fourth team
Watkins, 27, is a former top-five pick now on his fourth NFL team. He totaled eight touchdowns in three years in Kansas City, as many as he had in one year with the Rams in 2017. He missed eight games with injuries in 2020, finishing with 37 catches for a career-low 421 yards and two touchdowns. Active in the Super Bowl, he had one catch for 13 yards in the Chiefs’ loss to the Bucs.

Now that free agency has been in full swing for over a week we know where most of the top talent or talent period is going to sign. Miami has not gone on the spending spree of some past years but has added players, resigned some of their own players, and lost some players to other teams while also pulling off a couple of trades. Fan-favorite Ryan Fitzpatrick has now moved on to his ninth team, The Washington Football Team, and the team signed in his place Jacoby Brissett to a one-year deal. Center Ted Karras returned to the Patriots after not resigning with the Dolphins joining linebacker Kyle Van Noy who also returned to the Pats after his surprising release by the Phins. Also joining the Patriots was defensive tackle Davon Godchaux on a two-year deal. Linebacker Kamu Grugier-Hill left town to join the Texans and punter Matt Haack signed with the Bills after the Dolphins replaced him with Michael Palardy on a one-year deal.

Locals in the NFL FA Tracker: Utah State's Kyler Fackrell agrees to terms with LA Chargers

AROUND THE SHIELD — Kyler Fackrell is stepping into a role vacated by his former Utah State teammate.
The former Aggie linebacker agreed to terms with the Los Angeles Chargers on Wednesday, the Chargers announced, just a few days after ex-teammate Nick Vigil traded in his Bolts' blue for a purple jersey with the Minnesota Vikings.
A third-round selection by the Green Bay Packers in 2016, Fackrell played in 73 games over the past four years, including 18 starts. He's totaled 127 tackles, including 88 solo stops, to go along with 20.5 sacks, two forced fumbles and an interception. The best season of his career came with the Packers in 2018, when Fackrell had 10.5 sacks before briefly joining the New York Giants on a one-year deal.

2021 NFL free agency winners and losers: Cam Newton, Tom Brady on list

Card image cap

Dak Prescott: Four years ... $160 million ... no more contract questions in Dallas (until at least 2023) ... enough said.
Franchised players: Prescott and Leonard Williams weren't the only pending free agents to get tagged before quickly finding common ground on long-term extensions. Denver's Justin Simmons has also already raked in a new deal – for four years and $61 million, resetting the league's safety market in the process – somewhat unusual given franchise players are often negotiating well into July.
Patrick Mahomes: Ever since the Chiefs' Super Bowl 54 win to cap the 2019 season, the 2018 MVP's offensive line has been incrementally dismantled by injuries (OTs Eric Fisher, Mitchell Schwartz), free agency (G Stefen Wisniewski, C Austin Reiter) and a COVID-19 opt-out (G Laurent Duvernay-Tardif, who doubles as a doctor). However GM Brett Veach signed the top interior O-lineman in free agency, Joe Thuney, and added former Pro Bowler Kyle Long – amid expectations Duvernay-Tardif will return for the 2021 season. (Veach also re-signed veteran Mike Remmers, while Lucas Niang is also expected back after opting out.) There are still issues to sort through – Thuney, Long and Duvernay-Tardif can't all play guard – most notably the void at left tackle, though Fisher could be an option if his Achilles rehab goes well, and he and the team are open to a reunion. Still, overall, things seem to be looking up for Mahomes, who was last seen running for his life in Kansas City's Super Bowl 55 faceplant.

Now let’s get to this week’s questions!
Who is the Week 1 starter going to be next fall? Cam Newton? Jimmy Garoppolo? A quarterback in the NFL Draft? — Ethan B.
Newton has to be the leader in the clubhouse right now.
Though they could (and should) add a quarterback in the NFL Draft, throwing the rookie right into the fire would be extremely out of character for Bill Belichick. He always errs on the side of seasoning with first-year players, so having a new quarterback start the season opener makes little sense.

If it seemed as if NFL teams have been shedding contracts nearly as fast as signing them in recent weeks that's because it's almost true.
With a shrinking salary cap in a sport with few contracts that are fully guaranteed, teams have spent the weeks leading up to free agency and the first few days of the new league year getting out of deals signed in recent years when there was more money available to spend.
Whether it was Kansas City getting rid of banged-up and expensive starting offensive tackles Mitchell Schwartz and Eric Fisher, the Raiders cutting ties with Lamarcus Joyner and Tyrell Williams after building their free agent class around them, or Tennessee shedding starting defensive backs Adoree Jackson, Malcolm Butler and Kenny Vaccaro, veterans around the league have been sent to the chopping block.
