Meals on Wheels available for pets

Four-legged pets in the Salina area were surprised on Friday thanks to the new Meals on Wheels for pets program. Area seniors who already receive the Meals on Wheels can apply for the free meals for their dog or cats thanks to a partnership between Salina Senior Services, Friends of the Salina Animal Shelter, and the Atherton Veterinary Clinic.
“Are fear was that seniors who were receiving the Meals on Wheels and cannot get out were giving their animals part of their food," said Rosie Walter, director of senior services. "We want to make sure everyone and every animal is eating what they are supposed to be eating."

Investing in downtown Salina

Investing in downtown Salina
While several downtown Salina businesses received new looks over the past year, one building has been gutted and renovated to give it a modern look with a taste of the original building still left.
The Wedel Financial Group renovated two downtown buildings and combined them into one at 144 South Santa Fe Ave.
Mark Wedel, a certified financial planner for the past 31 years, and his wife Carolyn put their own unique touches to the historic buildings with the help of several local contractors.
“We found out that Wells Fargo offers an independent opportunity, so we went through a process where we had to get approved,” Mark Wedel said. “We wanted to have our own business so we could control having a local experience.

CAPS benefit auction going one...going twice...going online

Included in the memorabilia is a Kansas City Chiefs helmet signed by defensive end Frank Clark.
The benefit auction will have over 150 items and will take place online this year because of the coronavirus pandemic. It will start at noon on Friday, Feb. 5 and run until 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 7.
What is CAPS of Salina?
The goal of the nonprofit organization is to raise $60,000 this year to help offset operational expenses for programs offered by CAPS of Salina. Last year the auction raised just under $60,000.

Community members give to women who had purse stolen

Smiles and hugs were felt at the Dillons on Planet Avenue on Saturday after Joyce Fell, of Minneapolis, Kan., received a new purse and $800 from a few generous community members of the Salina Police Scanners Facebook page who heard that she had her purse stolen at the grocery store on Thursday.
Fell went to check out at the Dillons in Salina when she realized she had accidentally left her purse in the women's bathroom at the grocery store.
“It was my fault," Fell said. "My friend was waiting for me in the car and I had not even checked out yet, so I hurried up to get out of the bathroom. When I got up to the checkout, I realized I did not have my purse."

What to know about changes to Salina's free Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program

Salina’s free Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program sponsored by the Salina Area United Way will be at a new location with a few program changes from previous years because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The program served over 900 people last year, despite shutting down early due to COVID-19 in 2020. In years prior, it served over 1,600 taxpayers.
The new VITA location will be the Salina Area United Way office, 113 N. 7th St., where clients can pick up forms in the organization’s lobby to get the process started. Only one individual or one family, all wearing masks, will be allowed in the volunteer-staffed lobby at all times. Clients may complete the intake form in their vehicle at the parking site or at home. Detailed instructions on required identification documents are printed on the forms, which must be returned to the United Way lobby no later than March 29.

Event gives children, parents a reason to smile

Salina Dental Arts dentists and staff will host their third annual Give Kids A Smile event from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, Feb. 5, to provide free dental services to underserved children.
"We served approximately 100 children last year and hope to serve 100-150 this year," said Karlie Miller, office administrator for Salina Dental Arts. "Our goal is to raise awareness of the epidemic of untreated dental disease in our community because we know that nearly one in four children under the age of 5 already has cavities, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. We want to do our part to try to help the children in our community maintain good oral health and feel comfortable going to the dentist."
