Two First Nations deaths in custody in last week in NSW jails

Australian Greens
Evidence in the Budget Estimates hearing into Corrections this morning has disclosed that two First Nations people have died in NSW prisons in the last week alone. One of these deaths, that of a mid-50s First Nations woman in Silverwater Women’s prison on 5th March has been identified as an unnatural death.
The Department of Corrections this morning confirmed they have a policy of not proactively informing the public of any deaths in custody because of claimed concerns this “causes public angst”. Under further questioning, Corrective Services admitted that between 1 July 2020 to 5 March 2021 there were 24 deaths in prisons, of which 3 were identified as unnatural and 4 were First Nations inmates.

When a 55-year-old man was found guilty of having sex with and assaulting his 14-year-old "promised bride" in the mid-2000s, the Northern Territory Supreme Court handed him a two-year sentence, suspended after just one month.
The short jail term — which was based on the court's finding that the man believed his actions were permitted under traditional law — was later increased to a minimum of 18 months after the original sentence was deemed "manifestly inadequate" on appeal.

Mentoring Indigenous lawyers among Sen. Sinclair's retirement plans

TORONTO --
As Sen. Murray Sinclair prepares to retire from the Senate this week, his future plans include mentoring young Indigenous lawyers and writing his memoirs.
Sinclair, 70, will retire from the upper house on Jan. 31 after serving nearly five years. He will then turn his focus to educating Indigenous lawyers in Winnipeg.
“It was education that got us into this and it is education that will get us out of this, and I really believe that. I believe education is the key to reconciliation,” Sinclair told CTV News.
Sinclair, a member of the Ojibwe First Nation, was given the name Mizanay Gheezhik, which translates to “The One Who Speaks of Pictures in the Sky,” and was raised on a reserve north of Winnipeg by his aunt Josephine, a teacher who taught him the importance of education.
