An entire city burned completely to the ground. devastation, everything gone. everybody lost everything. reporter: we surveyed the damage from above, and the destruction is difficult to imagine. the view from above is apocalyptic. you can see a row of cars clearly trying to make it out. many of those stuck in accidents in a traffic jam on a one-lane road. all of those cars reduced to ash. reporter: lahaina residents are now being allowed back into the city today to see the destruction up close but not without a warning from the governor who told the local tv station in hawaii, i want to caution everyone, lahaina is a devastated zone, they will see destruction like they ve not seen in their lives. everyone, please brace themselves as they go back. as some may be able to return to their hometown today, as many as a thousand people are still missing and unaccounted for. honestly, we don t know. and here s the challenge. there is no power. there is no internet. ....

Local authorities say 80% of the coastal community is gone . from above, you can see even more of the broad stretch of destruction. homes, businesses, cars have been destroyed. these pictures we re about to show you will put all of that into perspective. these are before and after pictures from lahaina. at least 270 buildings entire neighbourhoods have been reduced to ash. the town was home to about 12,000 people. let s hearfrom one man who made it to safety, but lost everything. i lose my home, all my papers too, everything. that s only i can. ..i only have my wife, my son, and my car, i don t have time for the rest of my stuff. my passport or ids, anything. ....

And whatever. there s a limited supply of lithium or cobalt and all the things out there, so can t we have an elegant solution to make the transition to whatever it is? but this is one of our most successful industries. why don t we exploit that for the benefit of americans and make a smart transition from what we are living with? i agree with you we are a two trillion dollar a year industry and you re right we need more of all the above. interesting you re right we have short falls in critical minerals moving to transition but still powering 65 percent of the electricity grid by coal or natural gas so it s not an elegant transition, i think they re getting ahead of themselves but it s an inconsistent policy somewhat unserious energy policy by ....

Individuals that have been impacted. some of the things we can help do is reimburse some of the costs that the local communities are experiencing really brave first responders and the work they re going into allows us to tap into our resources that we have on the island like food water cots and so forth but also is going to provide med assistance to jump start the process for those individuals who have lost anything. it can be anything from financial assistance to support home repairs or replacement costs to prices counseling or disaster unemployment. those are all things that are part of this disaster declaration. looking at the devastation pretty clear the folks there will need all the above. yes. i m concerned about lodging. where will people stay? looks like so many homes are just annhilated. i m not sure what other additional shelter could there be out there and it recalls new ....
