The 4th quarter 2020 Adult Sabbath School Bible Study Guide was dedicated to education. Over the course of the thirteen weeks the studies covered a wide range of educational topics, almost all of which, given their context, appropriately centered around church and spirituality. In this essay, I wish to cast the education net a bit wider to highlight its most important role: liberty. Indira Gandhi, the former Prime Minister of India, expands on the notion that education is a precursor to freedom. She argues that “Education is a liberating force, and in our age it is also a democratizing force, cutting across the barriers of caste and class, smoothing out inequalities imposed by birth and other circumstances.” ....

My youth is full of mostly good memories of parents who loved me, grandparents who cared, siblings, uncles, aunts, and friends who made my life full. Church, Sabbath observance, tithing, avoiding coarse language these were also realities which circumscribed my life. In my family, the writings of Ellen G. White were taken seriously. An argument could easily be won by quoting “We have been told…” Your knowledge of the exact book and page number of the reference cemented your position as being correct and your argument as being irrefutable.
During boarding academy years, I began to question some of the verisimilitudes. How could we be so sure that the music of the Beach Boys was evil and degenerate? Why was it wrong to wear Levis, the most popular pants for adolescents of the day? Was it okay if they were white? And why could we not even walk from the administration building to the girls’ dorm wit ....

News of COVID-19 vaccines being developed have brought a sense of optimism in some but in others fears bordering on conspiracy theories. Not surprising, Adventists have joined the fray and have given the issue an eschatological twist. Without delving into some of these conspiracy theories, it is clear that COVID-19 has exposed Adventism’s entanglement with conspiracy theories. Adventism’s history is replete with conspiracy theories which have included secret connections between U.S. presidents and the popes, Jesuit infiltration of the General Conference, secret societies, ecumenical collusion, changes in the church logo, and recently COVID-19, which has been labelled a precursor or dress rehearsal to the mark of the beast. This raises the often-ignored question on why Adventism seems to have an insatiable appetite for conspiracy theories? What is it in us that makes us vulnerable? ....

It was a familiar setting for Zarith Méndez, as she set out to answer Bible questions as quickly and as accurately as she could in front of the computer. Méndez answered 99 out of the 100 multiple-choice questions correctly, beating her three rivals during Inter-America’s quinquennial Bible Connect competition, on Saturday, Jan. 30, 2021. She was crowned the champion of 2015-2019 and will represent the Inter-American Division (IAD) as a youth delegate during the Adventist World Church’s General Conference Session next year in Indianapolis, Indiana, United States.
Much like she did when she first won the IAD Bible Winner title in 2016 against 22 other contestants in the Dominican Republic at only 15 years of age, she breezed through the 100 questions on Saturday, finishing almost two minutes ahead of the first runner up.
