COVID-19 and the Wilding of the Church — What Sort of Leaders Do We Need?

COVID-19 and the Wilding of the Church What Sort of Leaders Do We Need?

Re-imagining was a key word in Newbold’s first Diversity Lecture of 2021 on Tuesday, February 9. After environmental disasters, God works in nature giving it an infinite capacity to bounce back. Similarly, God can work through leaders who model and encourage a re-imagining of the church in the wake of the pandemic.
The speaker at the lecture was Dr. Steve Aisthorpe, Mission Development Worker for the Church of Scotland, a specialist in leadership, a committed environmentalist, and an experienced mountaineer! His lecture was an extended exploration of the metaphor of “wilding” as it might apply in these days when the pandemic has affected the Church like an earthquake or other natural shock. ....

Bobbi Jo Reed, the subject of the eponymous documentary, along with Brent and Donna Jones, the directing and producing team, share the inspiring story of Bobbi Jo’s transformation from homelessness, addiction, and prostitution to healing hundreds of addicts in her Kansas City-based Healing House ministry.
We briefly discuss Bobbi Jo s testimony (watch the film for more) and then talk about the power of story and what hope means to the least of these in America. Healing House provides recovery housing to nearly 200 individuals every day in their thirteen private homes and two apartment buildings. ....

Toward an Adventist Theology of Health (Part 9) — A Necessary Medical Metanoia

Toward an Adventist Theology of Health (Part 9) A Necessary Medical Metanoia

In this column I will return to a subject I first discussed in a series of columns beginning in 2015. In those previous articles I tried to articulate an Adventist Theology of Health that takes into account not only the internal theological vision of our community but also the external socio-cultural context in which we are called to articulate our message on health. The internal vision and the external context are both dynamic realities. They require not only application, loyalty and coherence, but also a high level of cultural awareness, flexibility, self-criticism, creativity and the capacity of re-orienting the whole system in question. This is what I will label: the need of a medical-cultural “Metanoia”.[1] ....

Have you ever come to the aid of a friend that needed extreme support and miraculous type help and as a result was “delivered,” experiencing great success; however, in the retelling of the incident they never even mention you or gave you thanks in return?
If so, you share a mutual experience with God and with the prophet Isaiah.
This week’s lesson focuses on Isaiah 36–39. Within these chapters we find the story of King Hezekiah’s latter reign and years. 2 Kings 18:1–8 provides a summary of his earlier years, by highlighting his notable actions. Verses 5–7 state,
He trusted in the LORD the God of Israel, so that there was no one like him among all the kings of Judah after him, or among those who were before him. For he held fast to the LORD; he did not depart from following him but kept the commandments that the LORD commanded Moses. The LORD was with him; where he went, he prospered. ....
