SANTA FE – New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham on Monday signed into law legislation that prohibits discrimination based on traditional hairstyles and head coverings.
The “Crown Act,” as it’s known nationally, was conceived as a measure to protect African Americans from discrimination based on natural or traditional hairstyles. In New Mexico, the bill was crafted to be more inclusive and won support from a broader coalition, including Native American and religious advocates.
Under the new law, traditional hairstyles and religious coverings cannot be prohibited in work or school dress codes or used as an excuse to turn someone down for a job. ....

Governor Signs Impact Aid Legislation, Boosting Financial Support For Many New Mexico Public Schools

Measure provides certain school districts with access to more than $60 million; tribal leaders herald the long-awaited breakthrough
SANTA FE Alongside tribal leaders from all across New Mexico, Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham on Monday afternoon signed historic legislation ending credits for impact aid payments in the public school funding formula, providing school districts with federally impacted land access to more than $60 million to better serve their students, including many Native Americans.
In addition, a recurring $67 million appropriation from the general fund ensures that no district will be financially harmed from the change. ....

Expanded Vaccine Eligibility Begins In New Mexico

All New Mexicans age 16 or older who wish to be vaccinated against the coronavirus now have a chance to receive their shots, as Monday marked the start of expanded eligibility under the state Department of Health s distribution plan. 
The timeline for getting more shots out to the general public was sped up under a directive by the Biden administration to make all adults in the U.S. eligible by May 1. State officials also said they opened up eligibility because providers in some parts of the state were no longer able to find people to fill appointments. ....
