Insider attacks on Afghan army surge as US troop withdrawal nears

Deadly insider attacks against the Afghan army soared in the first quarter of this year, according to a US government report released on Friday.
The quarterly report of the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction also said the Taliban and other rebels were taking advantage of the coming American and Nato troop withdrawal, and that attacks on the Afghan security forces, mainly by the Taliban, surged 37 per cent from January to the end of March compared with the same period in 2020.
Insider attacks, in which security forces are targeted by infiltrators within their ranks, rose 82 per cent, and the casualties they caused doubled, the report said. ....

Afghan army abandons a base in Herat

The Afghan army has abandoned a base belonging to a brigade of border forces in Golran district of western Herat province, local officials said Thursday.
According to the officials, the base has been transferred to the Kahsan district provinces as a part of border security measurements.
“The troops have been temporarily transferred from the Kariz Elias area to the central base of Kamana (in Kahsan district). They will return as soon as they are equipped and fresh forces are recruited and trained,” Herat Governor Sayed Wahid Qatali said.
The Taliban, however, claimed that the base was captured following an attack of its fighter on Wednesday morning. ....

KABUL, April 29 (Reuters) - More than 100 Afghan security force personnel have been killed over the last two weeks amid a surge of Taliban attacks following Washington s announcement it would pull all U.S. troops out by Sept. 11, officials said on Thursday.

Mohib: Ready to control situation after foreign troops exit

KABUL (Pajhwok): National Security Adviser Hamdullah Mohib on Saturday the government was ready to deal with any difficult situation arising from withdrawal of foreign forces and the Taliban could not come to power by force.
Mohib made these remarks at a joint press conference with the director of Nation Directorate of Security, interior and acting defense ministers.
He said the Taliban were not committed to peace and hey have once again showed the people of Afghanistan that they prefer war to peace by declining to attend a scheduled conference in Turkey on the Afghan peace process.
A UN-sponsored meeting on peace in Afghanistan was scheduled to take place in Turkey on April 24 with representatives of the Afghan side, politicians and some countries, but the huddle was postponed due to the Taliban’s absence. ....
