The Affair movie review & film summary (2021)

The house in “The Affair” is based on the Villa Tugendhat, a UNESCO World Heritage site in Brno, Czech Republic. So many scenes are shot there that the place should have its own above-the-title credit. As in the film, it was built in the late 1920s for a husband and wife and, according to Wikipedia, “the villa soon became an icon of modernism.” It inspired
The Glass Room, the novel on which this film is based. It would have made more sense to keep the name of the book, because I have no idea exactly what affair the title alludes to; there are many and none of them is as memorable as the architecture. Full disclosure forces me to tell you I had no idea about Villa Tugendhat nor its history while watching director Julius Sevcík’s decades-spanning drama. I can also tell you my research afterwards changed nothing in this review, though it does explain why the film feels stalked by this building.

A real-life architectural gem is the centerpiece of
The Affair — and, in many ways, its most compelling character. The building is a modernist masterpiece, completed in 1930, when the term "modernist" embodied the thrill of risk-taking in a new age.
As in the movie's source material, Simon Mawer's 2009 novel
The Glass Room, the house is a hilltop construction of clean geometric lines, designed to hold light, and its changes in ownership over the years map out the tumultuous history of 20th century Czechoslovakia. Abstract concepts and aesthetic ideals kick-start the handsome yet muddled feature, but, as the English title suggests, romantic melodrama is the main event.

BUCHAREST: Romania has been seriously affected by the Coronavirus pandemic, which shut down film production and cinemas for several months. The closing of cinemas and the decrease of TV advertisement resulted in a significant decrease of the amount of money for the national Film Fund and, as a consequence, no production grants were allotted for 2020 and most likely won't be allotted for 2021 as well.
Although officially re-launched in January 2020, when it was taken over by the Ministry of Economy, the cash rebate scheme didn't function in 2020, and at the end of 2020 most of the projects already shot since the scheme opened in 2018 were waiting for the rebate.
