Jeanine Cava knows what food insecurity feels like. She experienced it after moving back to New Jersey after studying food sustainability in California while working toward a graduate degree.
When she returned, she and her children needed public assistance. She enrolled in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance program, SNAP, a lifeline for many families and individuals who need money to buy food.
But what she found was the SNAP program she knew in California, that connected recipients with food banks and other mass distribution facilities, but also educated the needy about how to get fresh vegetables from local farms and to make nutritious meals for themselves and their families, did not work as comprehensively here.
