i ve never been a huge fan of endorsements. thank you so much, it s so great to be in iowa. i m a big fan of sarah palin. the triumph of of reality television. you betcha. palin was a cruz gal before she was a trump gal. heads are spinning. media heads are spinning. you ll see more of these odd ball endorsements. he picked up the endorsement of john wayne s family. i love john wayne. this is fun for trump, and people can tell. people are talking about his temperament. like two tarantulas in a bowl in iowa. it s no surprise the establishment is in full panic mode. i would believe it would be a big mistake for iowa to support him. our next president of the united states donald j. tufrp. ask yourself this, what would you do the day after your 26-year-old son who lives at home with you is arrested in your home after assaulting his girlfriend and threatening to commit suicide, using one of these, an ar-15 assault rifle that is kept in your home? and, yes, he was drunk. what would you do? you would have your arms around him right now, right? you would be getting him all the help he needs right now. right? according to police reports, all of that happened at sarah pay lip s home last night in wasilla, alaska. but sarah palin wasn t home. she and her husband todd were on their way to a big event b in iowa. on nights like this, it s worth pausing to consider that if barack obama had not run the flawless campaign that he did in 2008 and won the presidency, sarah palin might tonight still be serving as the vice president of the united states of america instead of joe biden. and what happened in her home last night might have happened in the vice president s presence. here s why todd and sarah palin are not home tonight, giving their troubled 26-year-old son, who is the divorced father of a 4-year-old daughter, the loving parental guidance that he so obviously needs now, as much as he ever has. you ready for a commander-in-chief that will let our warriors do their job and kick isis ass? ready for someone who with will secure our borders, secure our jobs and secure our homes? ready to make america again, are you ready to stump for trump? i m here to support the next president of the united states, donald trump. there were actually very few applause lines like that in sarah palin s 20-minute speech. it was the quiet audience reaction we have seen at any trump event. what happened in the donald trump last night didn t happen tonight. here s her answer to donald trump not being a real conservative. now they re wailing, well, trump and his trum eters, well, they re not conservative enough. e o, my goodness gracious. what the heck would the establishment know about conservatism? tell me, is this conservative? gop authorities handing obama a blank check to fund obama care and planned parenthood and illegal immigration that competes for your jobs? how about the rest of us, right wing and bitter clinging proud klinglers of our guns our god and our religions and our constitutional. tell us that we re not red enough. yeah, coming from the accomplishment. as she clings to her wreckage of her unsuccessful attempts of tv stardom, sarah palin delivered her endorsement to the candidate that could guarantee her the biggest audience, the candidate who would best stoke the dying embers of her fan. joining us now are david frum, senior editor of the atlantic jonathan klein and sam stein, an msnbc co-host. are there any sarah palin true believers who are not already donald trump troou believers? are there any still sarah palin true believers? you can start there then. her star power has greatly diminished. i just don t get the sense that the draw is there like it was in the early obama years. i do think you re right. i think there s a strategic reason she attached her herself to donald trump and she craves that type of attention? i watched how much the rhetoric has changed. i watched when she was stumping for john mccain, and we were all very alarmed at what was happening at her specific rallies. i look back at that. i look and it s almost quantity. what we witnessed in 2008 specifically .really wasn t as alarming as what we re seeing now. i think he highlighted something that sorch has been underanalyzed in trumpism. trumpism has trumped chen eyche. when was the last time we had cheney come out and tell us how to think about foreign policy? let s listen to palin on foreign policy tonight. let me say something really positive about one of those individuals, rand paul. i m going to tell you about that libertarian streak in him that is healthy, because he knows, you only go to war if you re determined to win the war. and you quit footing the bill for these we re paying for some of kwar squirmishes that have been going on for centuries, where they re fighting each other. as i ve said before. she did say squirmishes. cheneyisms has disappeared under this cloud of trumpism which is now combined with some form of pay lippism. the palin endorsement is about the choice of donald trump over ted cruz is a contest over what is conservatism anyway. ted cruz insists it s an ideology, a set of answers to political questions. and donald trump has offered conservatism as an identity. sarah palin is one of the great pioneers of that idea. conservatism is an identity. it s not what you are, it s not what you think, it s not a set of answers. it s who you are. must remember first and second place in iowa were separated by 34 vote fps sarah palin can move a few hundred or couple of thousand votes from the cruz column into the trump column, that could potentially mean a trump win in iowa. and given that everyone was expecting him not to win iowa, two back to back wins, a week apart, that could be kind of a seismic event. ted cruz now going after donald trump on policy. let s listen to what ted cruz had to say about that today. mr. trump enthusiastically supported the tarp big bank bailouts. i disagree with him. we should have no bailouts of wall street banks. mr. trump enthusiastically supported president obama s stimulus plan and said the only problem was it should have been bigger. i don t think we should have a massive payoff to lobbyists from taxpayers. and you want to demonstrate that you re willing to stand up. trump s response is basically ted cruz is mean. he s not engaged yet on the policy debate with ted cruz. i think there s a fascinating difference between the two. there s a dimension of ideology, what do they believe. it includes policy or philosophical question. there s no one more purely conservative than ted cruz. then there s what david calls identity. it s a kind of approach to the establishment, a level of how confrontational are your politics, how willing are you to compromise. and that s where donald trump generally dominates. cruz is pretty far along with that as well. but nobody is more confrontational as front. if people need to decide whether they prefer trump or cruz, cruz has a lot of policies in his program. there s a huge sales tax. it would mean the lower and middle class paid much, much higher taxes than they are now. donald trump, because he doesn t care that much about policy, he squirms his way to whatever he thinks is popular at that time. and so in that way, he is much more willing to try to target the median voter than cruz is, and that way might end up actually being more electable than cruz if republicans end up carrying about that more than they care about keeping trump off the top of their ticket. let s listen to the calmest guy in the field talking about that temperamental ted cruz. when you talk about temperament, he s got a tough temperame temperament. you can t call people liars on the senate floor when they re your leader. it s not a good thing to do when you want to get the positive votes later on down. ted is worried about his temperament and people are talking about his temperament. he has to be careful. you did hear the sentence, i haven t talked about his temperament. that was the end of the paragraph. sam stein, i haven t talked about his temperament either. there, we re even. he s a terrible person. not that i would say that. but i ve heard. but this is again to piggy back on what my two esteemed co-panelists have said, this is sort of quintessentially identity politics. it s visceral reaction. i would add one thing. when you talk to people who are in the establishment, whatever you want to call the establishment, let s say they re party insiders among republicans, it s part of the reason why you re starting to get a sense that they re a little more comfortable with the idea of donald trump winning this thing. than they are ted cruz. they think donald trump is ideological mallable. he s basically worked in washington as a businessman before. he knows how it gets done. and so you re starting to see a bit of chatter, i would say, from establishment types saying okay, if it comes down to these two, we would probably prefer trump over cruz for precisely those reasons. columnists today said cruz and trump are the worst thing that can happen to the republican party, but are you hearing what sam is hearing, if they were forced to choose, more types would go with trump because he doesn t actually mean anything? i don t know what establishment means any more .. i think because people in washington know cruz better. there are some personal animosities that are maybe blinding them about what is the better choice. notice something cruz did in that statement you quoted a minute ago. i think this gets to the problem. ted cruz attacked president obama s stimulus and t.a.r.p. what washington republicans remember is that t.a.r.p. was a president bush measure. a third of americans know that. about half of americans identify t.a.r.p. as an obama measure, but it was a bush measure. it was one of the most difficult votes that many, many republicans cast in their career. and many were unhappy about it. but it was something that they were leaned on to do, that they felt was necessary, and that probably did save the world from much more terrible recession than even the one that was experienced. they were on the line then. and here is ted cruz arriving from texas after it s all over, condemning them and not even giving them the courtesy of acknowledging this was a republican bill done for republican reasons. quick break here. sam stein, thank you for joining us for the return of sarah palin. thank you, sam. gladly. coming up, a new poll shows how republican presidential candidates are hurting the republican party. and in the rewrite tonight, how a dead man endorsed donald trump today. what john wayne and donald trump really have in common. and later, triumph, the insult comic dog is back on the campaign trail. he will join us live from the campaign trail in new hampshire. you now have 30 seconds. okay. somebody tweeted tonight that i have arranged pay lip s endor endorsement of trump as a brilliant marketing ploy from the launch of new book. i want to categorically deny that. the republican party since goldwater has shed all of the elements of who might have seen who stood up against this tide towards trump and cruz. there used to be a lot of liberal republicans, if you remember. now most of the moderates have left the republican primary electorate. it was a very long process. now when the so-called establishment types, and i agree with dpaifd, it s not clear what that means anymore, when they re looking around for votes to stop this, those voters aren t in the party anymore. they embraced ir rationalism in the tea party period. a lot of republicans are now complaining correctly that trump or cruz would be a dpi saser for the party. david frum in my book wrote back in 2014 for the past five years said the american right veered towards a reactionary radicalism unlike anything seen in america in many years. and now you re seeing that fully play out. is this the way you expected it to play out. i ve been writing about this for a while. we ve had extraordinary neglect by the former leadership of the republican party the autopsy that said there s nothing wrong with taking away the medicare guarantee for people under 55. nothing wrong with not having a wage agenda, the only thing that s wrong is the party needed to undo the one thing the big governors never liked anyway, which is mitt romney s noises about immigration. that unsurprisingly triggered a rebellion. do you agree with e.j. s tracings of this over the arc of time that has led to where we are now. the republican party has been in a cycle for years now. of course you can t do any harm there and she becomes a free radical in the party. they sort of indulged the tea party into the establishment and then it overruns the establishment. and john boehner is gone and ted cruz is leading in the polls. remember, mitt romney flying to accept donald trump s endorsement during the 2012 campaign. it was another guy of celebrity, rich, can donate money, can get some attention in the media. they thought they could bring him just enough in the party and he was able to storm through the gates. the insurgents are too deep into the city center and there s no establishment left to fight. i don t know if there s a power to be able to do it at all even if they were capable of mobilizing. the recommendation that there was somehow an establishment that could band together and do something about this. e.j., did you find that establishment in going out there and researching this book? they wrote a very important piece called establishment tea. and essentially what they argued is that in order to hold power in the party, the establishment had essentially gone over to the tea party s views, parroting their views. they were kind of celebrating it as a kind of party unity, but i think you re seeing the kooss now. one of my favorite john f. kennedy quotes is from his inaugural address where he said he who rides to power on the back of the tiger usually ends up inside. and that is exactly what has happened to the republican leadership now. the funny thing is if you go all the way back to the goldwater period, there were people after goldwater won the nomination and conservatives essentially took over the republican party who asked the same questions david brooks asked in his column. why aren t they fighting. why didn t we do anything? this has been a moderate conservative refrain for 50 years. and no less an establishme establishmentarian mockingly tweeted today the return of sarah palin. this is a talent scout that went up to alaska and discovered her and david frum came back with this very possible report. she s a star, we have to elevate her. he pushed her towards where we are now. i remember 2008 when i caught the rumor. i watched then their three hours of sarah palin video available on youtube. i watched them. and i was alarmed. and wrote about it in 2008. but, you know, david brook, he s a good friend, a wise person. but what could the establishment do? could they raise $115 million in campaign funds to try to work their will in the republican party, that s just what they did. it was an astonishing display of economic muscle. i don t think it s fair to say it wasn t tried. it s been tried on a spectacular scale, and it failed. the problem is not effort. the problem is thinking. and the core problem is that the donor league of the republican party is not willing to make substantial concessions to the economic concerns of republican rank and file members. did you finish writing this last night? (train wheels on tracks) it had no mouth, but it spoke to me. it said, rocky mountaineer: all aboard amazing . the thing is the governor knew about this. the people in the so-called environmental office, all packed with cronies, not real scientists or environmentalist, they did this to the people of flint. and i ve been calling for attorney general lynch to investigate, arrest, prosecute him for a crime that was committed, a crime of both fraud, of covering up, and of polluting the water. there s been no big movement to do anything about this. they had a few state police h d handing out these bottles. this is all pr. the speech tonight he gave was pr. that was academy award-winning filmmaker michael moore reacting to michigan governor rick snyder s facilitate state of the state address tonight. to you, the people of flint, i say tonight, as i have before, i am sorry and i will fix it. no citizen of this great state should endure this kind of catastrophe. government failed you. federal, state and local leaders by breaking the trust you placed in us. i m sorry most of all that i let you down. you deserve better. you deserve accountability. you deserve to know that the buck stops here with me. i know apologies won t make up for the mistakes that were made. nothing will. but i take full responsibility to fix the problem so it will never happen again. during the governor s speech, demonstrators protested outside the michigan state house, demanding the governor s resignation. joining us now, lansing, michigan, mayor ran against michigan governor rick snyder in 2010. mr. mayor, what was your reaction to the governor s speech tonight. lawrence, it was good to hear him say the buck stopped there. it was good it began with him, with the emergency manager law, when the governor removes a mayor and essentially takes over that city in a hostile takeover, he s substituting his judgment and leadership for that mayor. and it s a very important job. huge mistakes were made. this is a massive debacle. it s going to take millions and millions to fix. but most importantly, lives are at stake. it s sobering to hear he s taking it seriously. we re talking about human life. it s great they re passing out bottles of water, but you can t shower in this. it s hard to cook with these bottle of water. there s so much that needs to be done to fix the infrastructure, the psyche, and the economic development, to encourage people to come to lansing. all the things that a mayor does that local leadership does that has been supplanted by the emergency manager system. he got a powerful emergency manager law. they say power corrupts and absolutely power corrupts absolutely. these emergency managers have absolute power and that, i believe, is some of the root of the problem here. i heard him spread the blame around. he s saying on one hand the buck stops here and spreading the blame around to, as he put it, federal, state and local. now after he took over basically the mayor s office there. they say success has a million authors and failure is an orphan. i m not entirely surprised by that, but there s no question that the governor through the emergency manager act took over, supplanted, it was a hostile takeover and it s happened in other cities as well. when you do that, you re taking full responsibility. and so the governor needs to be watching very carefully what those emergency managers do. i don t believe that s happened. we do need accountability. we need standards. i m going to be discussing that in washington with the u.s. conference of mayors. we need to demand accountability and stan doords and protocols and protections, by the way, and appeals process. there is no accountability. and by the way, speaking of accountability, he s talking about accountability for state, local and federal. what about the guy who made this happen. what about the emergency manager who s still in power now. he s been promoted and given a pay raise and is in charge of the local public schools. he can do for the people of detroit what he s done with the people of flint? when these gubernatorial powers were enacted such that a governor can take over, i heard a lot of talk at this distance how it violated democratic principles of democracy representative government. but what i didn t hear were really practical predictions about how this could go wrong. was this the kind of thing that was predicted, that would possibly go wrong under this kind of system? well, i certainly didn t predict this. and i don t think anybody predicted this level of catastrophe. but this shows you, lawrence, what can happen. the saying is famous, or infamous, that power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. these emergency managers have too much power. they have no accountability. and this governor ran on accountability. his big thing was talking about dash boards and measuring and metrics. where were the metrics? a former president meets with his probation officer, you wonder if james madison had that in mind when writing the constitution what can donald trump say that might impact? his sentence? tony blinken back in the middle east set to meet with the israeli prime minister just after the dramatic hostage rescue operation in gaza. and a key number of his war cabinet resigns and now the us is calling for a new un security council vote and back-to-back shark attacks does miles apart part off the coast of florida officials are now issuing a warning because of it. i m kate bolduan. would john berman, sarah sayyed is out. this is cnn news central morning something no former president has ever done donald trump will sit for a pre-sentencing interview with this probation officer. this interview will be part of the report the probation department will submit to judge juan were shot ahead of trump s sentencing on july 11, and for normal defendants it could be a significant factor in determining whether there will be present time. of course, donald trump is not a normal defendant. will this now cnn, chief law enforcement and intelligence analyst john miller jaume, we ve got some new information about how this will be similar and different to other meetings like this. so the normal process is that the probation officer sits with the defendant and in some cases, in this case, the defendant s lawyer and they go through a tick list. it s what is your home situation? du you live in a stable environment? do you have employment? can you get employment? are you suffering from any drug addiction? what is your criminal background as it violent in this case, donald trump is going to be different from a lot of defendants. in fact, the vast majority he lives in a triplex at the top of a building with his name on it. he has no criminal record. and yet like any other defendants, he does have multiple other open felony cases but as far as employment, drugs, and so on the question that they re trying to resolve at the probation department as a couple of things, but key to it is is he a good candidate for the community corrections environment in english, that means the prison correction environment, or being on probation without going to jail, but having to accept the conditions of probation. now, a lawyer present in bys zoo this will not be in-person and todd blanche will be there with donald trump. how unusual is that? is that what joe schmo, defendant normally gets? joe schmo defendant usually it comes down to see the probation officer, their probation officer wants to get a look at him or her, get a sense of that. but during covid, the system had to keep going. so virtual probation interviews became a thing. and this makes sense because he s in another city. you said probation here. what would probation exactly mean for donald trump so probation is if you are convicted of a crime and they say we re not going to incarcerate you, but we need to check up on you to make sure you re not going to re-offend or you re not re-offending parole is when you go to jail and they let you out early and they check on you after the fact. so this is an interesting thing. the manhattan district attorney, alvin bragg went to a lot of trouble to bring this case and to get this conviction. and he said in his controversial day one memo that he wants less people to go to jail especially in non and violent crimes, but he didn t single out white-collar crimes. so we don t know what they re going to ask for. and then very finally, john, this meeting will happen today well, we hear what comes out of it or how will we know what comes out of it? so technically we shouldn t hear what comes out of it the psr or the pre-sentencing report goes from the new york city department of probation to that state supreme court judge juan merchan. and it is to help him as he decides on the sentence, whether it s in jail or prison, or whether it s on probation. didn t what those conditions should be if it s probation, donald trump will probably have to check in with a probation officer once a month. sometimes once a week. he sounds more like a once a month candidate. and make sure he doesn t get arrested again, that s days out of trouble. john miller and education as always, thanks so much for being here this wall civics lesson really is no. i mean, all this stuff is new to me. donald trump will learn a lot about it today, no doubt, it s good that you don t know about. i appreciate that. so far yet, but the things john miller doesn t know. so we ll hunter biden, take the stand or are we now just hours away from closing arguments very soon, you could have that answer as hunter biden s trial gets back underway in delaware next hour, the president s don is facing multiple charges related to a 2018 drug purchase. he has pleaded not guilty. so where did things go now after what end? the week with the week ending last week with very dramatic and emotional testimony. marshall cohen is outside court for us. how soon do you expect to have that answer of where this really is headed and how fast march kate good morning. we should find out pretty soon because the proceedings resume here in wilmington, delaware at 8:10 and am just about one hour from now. and one of the first items on the agenda is to have an answer from the defense. they told the judge that they want wanted to take the weekend to think this over, figure out the final contours of their strategy. if hunter is going to take the stand in his own defense, or if they re going to rest their case to move on to closing arguments. now why might they want to do that? we ve always said it s unlikely and it would be incredibly risky. but before the trial, they said then some of their court filings that one of the things that they would want him to tell the jury if he decided to testify in his own defense was that he has been cleaned sober, and law abiding since 2019. kate, the jury is heard so much testimony about his rampant drug abuse, really painting him anyway sorry struggling and negative light they said, if he did testify, he would want to convey to the jurors directly that he s been cleaned for several years now, but of course, if he did testify, prosecutors could grill him and they said in filings that they would probably want to bring up his discharge from the navy ten years ago after a positive drug test and that they might try to attack his credibility by bringing up that in their view, he not only light on this gun for him, but he s also lied on his taxes. so a huge decision, it would be a risky move. we should find out in about one hour so then add it all up with the caveat of it s uncertain what we re going to hear right when court picks back up, but how soon could the jury have this case well, if he doesn t testify, then it s time for closing arguments. both sides will be able to give their final push to the jury on why they think they should get a conviction or an acquittal, then there s jury instructions as well from the judge educating the jurors, instructing them on the laws in this case. the elements of the alleged crimes and how they should conduct their deliberations. now, one of the things that the defense wants the judge to instruct the jury you re about today during those instructions, is what they call their theory of the case. the simplest, most straightforward reason why in their view, this trial should to end with three not guilty verdicts. and they told the judge that she should instruct the jury that hunter biden, quote, did not believe that he was either a drug user or addict at that time when he bought the gun and when he possessed the gun, they ve said all along that if he did not know, he was a drug addict, if he did not no, he was a user than he cannot be convicted of these crimes. so it could happen today, kate, it very likely will and i ll pick back up an hour from now. thank you,
