Credits: Photo: Howard Zhong Next image Chess has a long history at MIT that began decades before 62 million households tuned in to Netflix’s miniseries “The Queen s Gambit.” Though the show ranked as Netflix’s No. 1 in 63 countries within its first month, and sparked a global surge in the sale of chess sets and books, several members of MIT’s chess club say, with a laugh, that they haven’t seen it yet. Tyrone Davis III, a junior computer science major, a U.S. National Chess Master, and the president of MIT’s chess club, says he plans to watch the miniseries eventually. For now, he says it’s been exciting to see growing public interest around the game he’s been playing since middle school. ....

The capstone design class in the Course 20 major, class 20.380 (Biological Engineering Design) has a different theme every semester, and in September there was little doubt about this fall’s topic Addressing the Pandemic with BE. “We weren t sure how students would respond. Would they be exhausted by Covid? Instead, students leapt at the chance to apply their skills to such an immediate problem,” says Professor Angela Koehler, a member of the teaching team. ....
Next image In April 2020, the Institute launched the MIT Staff Emergency Hardship Fund at a time when many MIT community members were beginning to experience sudden and unexpected financial challenges due to Covid-19. The MIT Staff Emergency Hardship Fund Advisory Committee, consisting of staff, faculty, and senior administrators, was formed to guide the launch, and to provide counsel on policies and procedures. The fund, designed to provide financial assistance in the form of awards that do not need to be repaid, is available to full- and part-time benefits-eligible staff and postdocs (associates and fellows) who are experiencing an immediate and temporary financial hardship due to a sudden or non-recurring emergency for example, a loss of household income; new or increased expenses directly related to Covid-19; out-of-pocket medical bills due to serious illness or injury; and other expenses caused by a fire, flood, or natural disaster.
