BBC - Travel - Langkawi: The curious island of the strange colugos

You don't have to travel far before the hotels of Malaysia's "honeymoon island" are supplanted with the colourful low-rise farmhouses of the verdant interior. This is rural Langkawi at its most bucolic; the domain of swamp buffalo gently grazing in company of their faithful companions, the cattle egret. Heading north-west, the lowlands give way to the jagged ridges of Machinchang Cambrian Geoforest Park, a 500-million-year-old product of geological activity now carpeted by lush rainforest.

Some of the holiday island's elite properties are sandwiched between this rainforest and the north coast. Though these resorts are usually only open to guests, my guide, French primatologist and passionate conservationist Priscillia Miard, has forged relationships with the resident naturalists and we were granted access to wander through the grounds of The Andaman Resort unsupervised.

Major disaster averted in resort fire

Under control: The fire that gutted part of the five-star Andaman Resort in Langkawi has been contained.
LANGKAWI: Quick action by firemen averted a major disaster and possibly saved the tropical rainforest on this holiday island from being engulfed in fire.
Firemen managed to contain the blaze at the luxurious Andaman Resort to prevent it from spreading to the 10 million-year-old rainforest located within its vicinity at Datai Bay.
About 50 firemen were involved in the operation yesterday evening.
The fire, which started in the kitchen of the five-star hotel at about 4pm on Tuesday, destroyed almost the entire building which was constructed of timber.

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 13 ― The Andaman, a Luxury Collection Resort which is a popular destination for revellers in Langkawi Island, is still affected by a fire which started yesterday.
According to a reader there who reached out to Malay Mail, the fire which destroyed the resort’s kitchen is also said to be affecting the rainforest nearby.

Andaman Luxury Collection Resort by Marriott in Langkawi, Malaysia and the property has been totally destroyed.
A crew of 40 firefighters has tried over a long period of time to get the fire under control which has pretty much gutted the resort.
The Andaman was a beautiful resort in Langkawi, one of my favorite destinations here in the Southeast Asia region.
The Star reported today that it will likely be out of business for a long period of time (if not forever) following the fire.
The fire that gutted part of the five-star Andaman Resort in Langkawi has been brought under control.
