County honors local veteran, Claude Martin, with special day

CLINTON Members of the Anderson County Commission, during their regularly monthly meeting Monday, Oct. 19 honored local veteran Claude Martin.
In honor of Martin, who enlisted in the United States Army Air Corp when he was 15 years old, and served during both World War II and the Korean War, the County Commission approved a proclamation naming Friday, Oct. 30, 2020, as Claude Martin Day in Anderson County.
Martin, a lifelong resident of Anderson County, was present at the meeting to receive the proclamation, which was a surprise to him. The formal proclamation was signed by Anderson County Mayor Terry Frank, Commission Chairman Josh Anderson, Director of Veteran Services Leon Jaquet and County Clerk Jeff Cole. ....

Oak Ridge Mayor: 'Double your efforts' for novel coronavirus safety

Oak Ridge Mayor Warren Gooch said Tuesday that between 6.7% and 8% of Oak Ridge residents have been diagnosed with COVID-19 since last March and 150 people are being diagnosed with COVID-19 weekly.
These statistics came as part of a virtual speech by the mayor to the Oak Ridge Chamber of Commerce Tuesday morning. Gooch said the statistics came from Council Member Ellen Smith’s analysis of information from the state of Tennessee.
“I want to … urge you to double your efforts,” the mayor said, outlining various health measures, such as wearing face coverings, washing hands and getting flu shots.
“Be safe and please let’s keep fighting this virus. Be positive. There’s clearly difficult days ahead. There’s help along the way, but the good Lord helps those who help themselves,” he said. ....

Closing Courthouse for COVID-19 action stalls

CLINTON, Tenn. An attempt to close the Anderson County Courthouse and other county-owned buildings to foot traffic for a period of time due to COVID-19 concerns failed to pass Monday night.
Anderson County Commissioner Catherine Denenberg made the motion to close the Courthouse and other buildings, and fellow commissioner Theresa Scott seconded. Both represent areas of Oak Ridge. Scott explained the measure would apply not just to Anderson County courts, but also other offices such as the Department of Motor Vehicles and the office of Anderson County Clerk Jeff Cole.
Scott shared statistics on deaths and hospitalizations. She said that measures such as requiring masks would not work well enough for preventing the spread of COVID-19. ....
