A Fort Collins woman is the first to be sentenced in a fentanyl death case since the Colorado legislature created the felony charge in 2022.
Fort Collins Police Services arrested Branco Sept. 7 of 2022 in connection to the overdose death of Kara Gorman, who was found unresponsive by her boyfriend. According to court records, the Branco and Gorman — who was born in Kansas but had recently moved to Northern Colorado — were in communication by text about purchasing “blues,” a code word for fentanyl, only hours before Gorman was found. FCPS was unable to find any other source for the fatal dose of fentanyl.
Andrea Branco, 40, sold the fentanyl that killed Kara Gorman, 24, in September 2022. She pleaded guilty to fentanyl distribution causing death.
A woman sentenced Thursday for selling fentanyl that killed another woman in 2022 was the first to be sentenced under a new 2022 law that aims to fight the fentanyl epidemic, the Eighth Judicial District Attorney's Office announced in a news release.
Duhon joined the office in 2011 and, over her 12-year-career "established herself as a fierce advocate for victims as well as a forward-thinker in addressing contemporary, complex issues in criminal and social justice," a recent release said.
