The Fannie and John Hertz Foundation has selected three MIT students as recipients of its prestigious fellowships this year: Allen Liu ’20, Alex Miller ’21, and Isabelle Yan Phinney ’20. In addition, two Hertz Fellows from other undergraduate institutions will soon join the MIT community as doctoral students: Kartik Chandra (computer science), and Alexander Zlokapa (physics).
The foundation awarded 12 fellowships in all, chosen from a pool of over 900 applicants from around the country.
“The 2021 Hertz fellows embody the kind of transformative scientific talent our nation and world need now,” says Robbee Baker Kosak, president of the Fannie and John Hertz Foundation. “The fellows we’ve selected demonstrate an unusual capacity for creative exploration and problem-solving. We’re pleased to support their research and look forward to the impact these fellows will have on our future.”

On a quest through uncharted territory

Ankur Moitra, associate professor of mathematics at MIT, seeks to determine how machine learning, used in increasingly diverse and numerous applications, actually works. He is attempting to put ML “on a rigorous foundation,” analyzing the methods that are currently used to put it into practice.

The Art of Mathematics in Chalk

Scientific American
ISOPERIMETRY: A conundrum dating back to the ancient Greeks called Dido's problem asks: Among all planar figures having the same perimeter, which one encloses the greatest area? The answer, the Greeks knew, is the circle, and it was finally proved in the 19th century. But a related problem persists in non-Euclidean geometry. Gilles Courtois, director of research at the Institute of Mathematics of Jussieu in France, was studying this question. “We thought that we had found a path toward a solution,” he says. “The scheme was so simple that we were able to write it on the board.” Unfortunately, the idea didn't pan out, and the project “remains a work in progress.” Credit: Jessica Wynne
