ઓલિમ્પિકના પ્રથમ દિવસે જ વેઇટલિફ્ટિંગમાં સાઇખોમ મીરાબાઈ ચાનૂએ ભારતનું મસ્તક ગૌરવથી ઊંચું કરી દીધું છે. દેશ અને ચાનૂ માટે આ વિજય કોઈ જેવી તેવી સિદ્ધિ નથી. દેશ માટે એટલા માટે કે બે દાયકા બાદ વેઇટલિફ્ટિંગમાં કોઈ ચંદ્રક મળ્યો છે. અને ચાનૂ માટે એટલા માટે કે ૨૦૧૬ના રિયો ઓલિમ્પિકમાં કોઈ ચંદ્રક મેળવી શકી ન હોવા છતાં ચાનૂ હિંમત હારી ન હતી અને સખત મહેનત કરતી જ રહી. હવે ચાનૂ ફક્ત એક ખેલાડી નથી પરંતુ લાખો છોકરીઓ માટે પ્રેરણાનં શ્રોત બની ગઈ છે. ચાનૂ અગાઉ ૨૦૦૦માં સિડની ઓલિમ્પિકમા કર્ણમ મલ્લેશ્વરીએ કાંસ્ય ચંદ્રક મેળવ્યો હતો. તેનો અર્થ એ થયો કે વેઇટલિફ્ટિંગમાં ભારતને સિલ્વર મેડલ અપાવનારી પ્રથમ મહિલા ખેલાડી બની ગઈ છે મીરાબાઈ ચાનૂ. ચાનૂની આ સિદ્ધિને વિશેષ બિરદાવવાની જરૂર એટલા માટે પણ છે કે તે જે ગ્રામીણ બેકગ્રાઉન્ડમાંથી આવે છે ત્યાં કોઈ રમતને એક ભવિષ્ય બનાવવાનું કોઈ સ્વપનામાં પણ વિચારી શકે નહીં. પરંતુ બાળપણથી જ વજન ઊંચકવાની તાકાત રાખતી ચાનૂની આ પ્રતિભાને તેના પરિવારે ઓળખી લીધી હતી અને તેને દરેક રીતે ટેકો આપીને આગળ વધવા પ્રેરિત કરી. ત્યારે ચાનૂ ઓલિમ્પિકના મુકાબલા સુધી પહોંચી શકી. વેઇટલિફ્ટિંગની ટ્રેઇનિંગ માટે ચાનૂને જે રીતે સંઘર્ષ કરવો પડયો તેજ તેની સફળતાની સીડી બની બની ગયો હતો.
ઓલિમ્પિકમાં ભારતની આ જોરદાર શરૂઆતથી એક બાબત સાબિત થઈ ગઈ છે કે, જો ખેલાડીઓને યોગ્ય અને પૂરતા પ્રમાણમાં તક આપવામાં આવે તો રમત-ગમતના મોરચે આપણો દેશ પણ અગ્રણી હરોળમાં પહોંચવામાં પાછળ નહીં રહે. ચાનૂની પહેલાં રિયો ઓલિમ્પિકમાં ભારતને ચંદ્રક જીતાડનારી મહિલા ખેલાડીઓ સાક્ષી મલિક અને પી.વી. સિંધુને કોણ ભૂલી શકે. આ ખેલાડીઓની આ સિદ્ધિઓ તેમની કઠોર મહેનત અને દૃઢ મનોબળની કથા વધારે છે. આજે પણ પરિસ્થિતિ એવી છે કે પ્રતિભા તો ચારે તરફ છે પરંતુ સંસાધનોના અભાવમાં અહીં સુધી પહોંચવું દરેક માટે સંભવ બનતું નથી. જો કે તેના માટે આપણી રમતની નીતિ વધારે જવાબદાર છે. સ્થાનિક સ્તરે જ રમતને પ્રોત્સાહન આપવાનો પ્રયાસ પહેલેથી જ કરવામાં આવ્યો હોત તો આજે ભારતની સ્થિતિ અલગ જ હોત. ઓલિમ્પિક અથવા અન્ય આંતરરાષ્ટ્રીય રમતોના પાછલા ચંદ્રકના આંકડા પર એક નજર કરીએ તો ભારતની સ્થિતિ ઘણા બિંદુઓ પર વિચારવા મજબૂર કરે છે. આપણે શા માટે ટોચના પાંચ દેશોમાં આપણું સ્થાન પાકંુ કરી શક્યા નથી? શા માટે કોઈપણ રમત આયોજનમાં વધુમાં વધુ ચંદ્રક જીતીને દુનિયાને એ બતાવી શકતાં નથી કે વિશ્વ ગુરુ ભારત બધામાં ગુરુ છે? સ્વાભાવિક છે કે આ સવાલોના જવાબ સરળ નથી. દુર્ભાગ્ય તો એ છે કે, ભારતમાં મોટાભાગના ખેલ સંઘ અને સંસ્થાઓ રાજકારણીઓના મુઠ્ઠીમાં હોય છે. એવામાં નવી પ્રતિભાની શોધનું કામ કોણ કરે?
ચાનૂની આ સફળતા દેશના રમત-જગત પર ફરીથી નજર નાખવાની એક તક છે. દેશમાં નવી નવી રમત પ્રતિભાઓને શોધી કાઢવાનું સૌથી મોટું કામ છે. તેના માટે સૌથી પહેલાં તો ખેલ સંસ્થાઓનું સુકાન સંપૂર્ણ રીતે ખેલાડીઓના હાથમાં જ સોંપી દેવું જોઈએ. તો જ પ્રતિભાઓની ઓળખ અને તેમને તૈયાર કરવાની કામગીરી સરળ થઈ શકે. જો કે, એવું પણ નથી કે પાછલા પાંચ-સાત વર્ષમાં રમત પ્રત્યે સરકારનું ધ્યાન ગયું નથી. હવે ઘણા રાજ્યોમાં સ્પોર્ટ્સ યુનિવર્સિટીઝની સ્થાપના ઉપર પણ કામ થઈ રહ્યું છે. એક સવાલ એ પણ છે કે, ભારતમાં જ્યારે ક્રિકેટ જેવી રમત એક વૈશ્વિક બિઝનેસનંુ સ્થાન લઈ શકતી હોય તો બીજી રમતોમાં પણ આવો પ્રયોગ કેમ ના થઈ શકે? જો કે આના માટે સરકારે જ પહેલ કરવી પડશે.
