Prehistoric footprints discovered in Wyoming revealed the earliest evidence of mammals hanging out by the ocean. While the rocks at the Hanna Formation are now located hundreds of miles from the ocean, things were much different about 58 million years ago when Wyoming was on the coast of the ocean.

US scientists have uncovered hundreds of fossilised footprints stretching out over a kilometre in Wyoming – and it’s the earliest evidence of mammals hanging out by the ocean.
Today the tracks are hundreds of kilometres from the coast, but the team used fossilised plants and pollen to date the footprints to 58 million years ago – back when the environment would have been a brackish nearshore lagoon.

New Study Shows Ancient Hippos Walked 'Beaches' of Wyoming


When you say that you are 'going to the beach', almost no one would think that you are anywhere remotely in Wyoming. However, a recent discovery of fossilized tracks shows that at one time in history, a hippo-like creature was roaming about in the south-central region of the state on beaches...Yes, beaches!
Researchers from the University of Utah out of Salt Lake City discovered the tracks of what was likely a Coryphodon, which is a black bear-sized creature and also a mammal that represents the earliest known evidence of their kind that would gather near the ocean. Those animals were around 58 million years ago, which at least explains the 'beaches' in Wyoming a little bit better.

Prehistoric footprints suggest mammals did like to be beside the seaside

Fossilised footprint tracks, recently discovered within the Hanna Formation in Wyoming, USA, which have been dated to 58 million years ago, may represent the earliest evidence of mammals gathering by the sea, according to a study published in
Scientific Reports. The findings suggest that mammals may have first used marine habitats at least 9.4 million years earlier than previously thought, in the late Paleocene (66-56 million years ago), rather than the Eocene (56-33.9 million years ago).
Drs. Anton Wroblewski and Bonnie Gulas-Wroblewski examined and photographed over 1,000 metres of fossilised footprints in an area dated back to 58 million years ago by plant and pollen fossils. The authors identified various different tracks. One set showed relatively large, five-toed footprints, comparable to the foot size of a modern-day brown bear, another showed medium-sized, four-toed footprints. The authors suggest that the five-toed prints were made by Coryphodon, a type of semiaquatic Pantodont, similar to a hippopotamus. The four-toed prints did not match skeletal evidence of mammals known from the late Paleocene, but show similarities with artiodactyls and tapiroids (types of hoofed mammals) which have yet to be shown to have existed in the Paleocene.
