Portugal - Leather’s circular economy credentials are clear, APIC president says 23 February 2021
The president of Portugal’s tanning industry association, APIC, Nuno Carvalho, has said a strategic plan the organisation is currently working to emphasises leather’s place in the circular economy that governments, companies and consumers insist they want to move to, reports Leatherbiz.

In a recent interview with the national newspaper Diário de Notícias, Mr Carvalho said: “The circular economy is ever-present in this sector and this is an idea we reinforce in the ongoing strategic plan that APIC has in place at the moment. The tanning industry and leather are intrinsically circular.”

Our clothes, however, have made it. According to a study led by the Ocean Wise conservation association in Canada, microplastics from clothing textiles have set up a veritable colony in the freezing indigo waters.

The Leather and Hide Council of America (LHCA) has launched the “Real Leather Stay Different 2021 International Student Design Competition”, open to students from any country, reports ILM.
The LHCA said the international competition builds on a similar model to the ongoing competitions in Taiwan, China, UK and Italy. Held completely online, it is open to all students and recent graduates from any university in any country. “We believe this exciting event will help take our design competition to the next level”, said Stephen Sothmann, President, LHCA.
