PRC Ilocos Sur offers affordable, painless saliva-based COVID-19 test

VIGAN CITY, Apr. 25 (PIA) – The Philippine Red Cross (PRC)-Ilocos Sur Chapter offers the cheaper and less invasive saliva testing as an alternative to the reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) test, which the Department of Health (DOH) considers as the gold standard for detecting COVID-19.

PRC-Ilocos Sur Chapter Administrator Veronica Tactay said that saliva testing is 98 percent accurate and like the traditional nasopharyngeal swab test, this also undergoes the RT-PCR technique but only differs in the way specimens are collected.

Tactay said, “Compared to the nasopharyngeal swab, wherein a sterile swab is inserted through a nostril and into the nasopharynx, the saliva test is considered less painful if not totally painless as patients only have to spit into a tube that will then be submitted to a PCR laboratory for analysis.”

DOST scholars in the Ilocos launch Project YACAP to aid elders, PWDs

You must have heard millions of times how young people have the power to change the world.

Most of you probably regarded this only as a saying and never dwelled deeper to check whether the youth really holds that much power.

But it does, because no matter how young you may be, it’s never too early to start changing the world and if you have a heart for serving others, you can be of use.

This must be the reason why scholars of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) in the Ilocos Region have launched Project YACAP or Youth Advocacy in Caring for the Aged and Persons with Disabilities.
