The central government is in favour of merging the goods and services tax (GST) rates of 12% and 18% into a single slab, a top finance ministry official said, acceding to a demand first made by some states and endorsed by the Fifteenth Finance Commission (FFC).
GST Council, India’s federal indirect taxes body, may discuss the matter at its meeting in March, the official added.

Congress to name new Rajya Sabha leader as Ghulam Nabi Azad's term ends


The Congress would be naming its new Leader of Opposition in the Upper House as Ghulam Nabi Azad s term as a member of the Rajya Sabha is ending this month.
As per the party s constitution, Sonia Gandhi as Chairman of the Congress Parliamentary party is authorised to name and appoint the Leader of the Congress in the House. Being the principal opposition party, the Congress leader will be the leader of the opposition parties in the Rajya Sabha.

The farmers-led agitation has continued to shake the national capital this week, with protesters refusing to budge from their demands, even rejecting the Narendra Modi government’s proposal to dilute major provisions of the three contentious farm laws.
