Ghana's LGBTQ+ communities are under assault, harassment – Ghana Visions

+
The office of an LGBTQ+ advocacy and support group in the west African nation of Ghana was raided Wednesday by armed police. The group, LGBT+ Rights Ghana, announced the police action with a video posted to their social media, and later made the decision to indefinitely close the location due to concerns about safety in the deeply conservative nation which criminalizes same-sex sexual relations. The center, which is in the capital city of Accra, opened January 31, but was immediately met with strong opposition from government officials and religious authorities, with threats of violence from local traditional leaders. Naomi Campbell, Idris Elba, and others have spoken out in support of the community.

February 25, 2021
The 5-bedroom apartment turned office, was recently opened for the promotion of LGBTQI rights in the country.
The closed down was undertaken in collaboration with the landlord of the apartment as well as the Kwabenya Traditional Council.
According to a Police source, the exercise followed a complaint by the owner of the apartment, Dr Asenso Gyambi about suspicious activities ongoing in the apartment.
In an interview, Dr Gyambi, said the use of his facility for LGBTQI activities was in breach of the tenancy agreement with the tenant who rented it as an office for a non-governmental organisation focused on health.

An LGBT+ rights group in Ghana has had its offices raided and shut down by national security forces.
LGBT+ Rights Ghana announced the news on Twitter on Wednesday (24 February) and called on allies to speak out about the shocking incident.
“A few days ago, traditional leaders threatened to burn down our office but the police did not help,” the organisation wrote on Twitter.
“At this moment, we no longer have access to our safe space and our safety is being threatened. We call on all human rights organisations, and allies, to speak out against these attacks and hate crimes we are being subjected to.”
