Democratic assemblyman and chairman of the new jersey democratic party. mr. chairman, thanks very much for being here. good to be here, rachel. was i unfair of my character z characterization of new jersey democrats? no, but the majority of democrats elected in new jersey in the general assembly, 70% voted no on this bill. 66% of the democrats in the state senate voted no. so there was a small portion of democrats in both houses that sided with the republicans on this bill and got it done. we fought real hard because what this bill does, it s an attack on the middle class. it s an attack on the people who teach our children and who protect our cities and fight our fires. and what this bill does is it makes them bear the responsibility for a lot of problems that were not of their making. and so we fought real hard. but unfortunately there were some democrats who chose the side with the republicans on this bill. does the fact that nearly one-third of democrats did peel off and go ....

there s an asimply man here in the state of new york that want to ban smoking in cars if they have kids in their cars. and we all know about the effects of secondhand smoke but many say it should be a parental decision because they are in their own cars. and others say if you can t make that decision for yourself then the government has to tell you not to put your kids in danger. it s just as serious, according to the assemblyman, as not putting a seatbelt on your kid. apparently if officers see you driving and you are smoking with a kid in the car with you under 14, and they say 14 is the cut off because kids younger than that are less likely to speak up and say, hey, mom, dad, put that out. and they can pull you over and give you a ticket up to 100 bucks. we asked you about the new law ....
