AUSTIN, Texas - Moving into Stage 4 of the Austin Public Health Risk-Based Guidelines is now imminent for Austin-Travis County, after surpassing 30 new hospital admissions on the 7-day moving average.
While APH officials confirm the trend before moving stages, they are urging the public to take action now by getting vaccinated and wearing a mask to help stop the rising levels of cases and hospitalizations.
"We need the community to act as if we are in Stage 4 now to help prevent the continued spread of COVID-19 variants," said Austin-Travis County Health Authority, Dr. Desmar Walkes.

Austin requesting staffing help from state as COVID hospitalizations increase

Austin requesting staffing help from state as COVID hospitalizations increase
Requesting help from the state is a strategy that has been utilized during peak pandemic periods.
AUSTIN, Texas - Hospitals in Travis County are experiencing a shortage of staff as COVID hospitalizations increase, according to Austin-Travis County Health Authority Dr. Desmar Walkes.
"Our ICU bed capacity is strained and largely this is due to the fact that we have a shortage of staff," said Dr. Walkes in an APH briefing on Thursday. "We are in the process of making a request to the state for help with additional staffing."
However, according to a spokesperson for Ascension Seton, Baylor Scott & White, and St. David’s HealthCare, the Austin-area hospitals are currently staffed appropriately.

Some Austin area businesses are taking proactive measures after four cases of the coronavirus delta variant hit Austin-Travis County this week.
Austin Public Health announced on Thursday that Austin-Travis County would return to Orange, or Stage Three out of five stages, of its coronavirus risk-based guidelines.
Owner John Kunz of Waterloo Records said the decision to require masks again was a difficult one.
"I probably would have waited for Stage Four to kick in before we went back to it, but, you know, we just didn't want to be responsible for being the place where someone might have contracted the delta variant," Kunz said.

AUSTIN, Texas -- Austin city and Travis County public health officials on Thursday raised their coronavirus risk-based guidelines to Stage 3 for the first time since the winter surge, urging unvaccinated people to avoid nonessential travel and take other precautions after seeing a "dramatic increase" in new Covid-19 cases and hospitalizations in recent days.
ABC affiliate KVUE reported that officials are concerned after confirming four cases of the dangerous and highly transmissible Delta variant of the virus, which has contributed to similar spikes in more-populous areas across Texas recently.
