AUSTIN, Texas - Austin Public Health (APH) and Travis County have reached a substantial milestone as they have now administered 400,000 COVID-19 vaccines.
"This is a big milestone for our community. I'm grateful for everyone who helped us get here, including the doctors, nurses, firefighters, first responders, school districts, and community members across our region that volunteered to help get our neighbors vaccinated," said Travis County Judge Andy Brown in a news release. "We are not done yet. If you or the 12 and older children in your life haven't gotten vaccinated yet, now is the time to do so."

A patient receives a COVID-19 vaccine on March 27.
Almost 900 people received a first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine at walk-up clinics held by Austin Public Health on Thursday.
APH officials said it’s part of their plan to shift to a hybrid model for vaccine distribution. Starting in May, APH will maintain a few of its large distribution sites but will incorporate more community-based vaccination events.
“We are really looking forward to the efforts of providing vaccines that are near individuals in the neighborhoods that need them the most,” APH Director Stephanie Hayden-Howard said. She said the department will target specific areas and zip codes in multiple settings – like apartment complexes, community centers and through faith-based organizations.

Austin health officials urge COVID-19 vaccines, hygiene as cases grow

As the number of coronavirus cases and hospitalizations have begun to inch up in Austin and Travis County, local health officials are urging residents to keep up healthy practices and get the COVID-19 vaccine.
On Monday, 143 new coronavirus cases and 144 hospitalizations were reported, marking an increase of the disease in the area, interim Austin-Travis County Health Authority Dr. Mark Escott on Tuesday told Travis County Commissioners Court and Austin City Council members.
For the past several weeks, the number of new cases had been oscillating around 100, Escott said. Now, the cases are oscillating between 115 and 125, he said.
"COVID is still here. It's still spreading. We're still seeing people infected and hospitalized," he said.

Local health authorities have announced updated pandemic safety guidelines.

Local health authorities are toning down some pandemic safety rules for people who are fully vaccinated against COVID-19, Austin Public Health announced Tuesday.
“As more people become vaccinated in our area, we are able to move to more lenient requirements for those individuals,” Interim Austin-Travis County Health Authority Dr. Mark Escott said in a written statement Tuesday. “However, we have not yet reached herd immunity in our community. To get there, we need more people to acquire immunity which is why we encourage people to get the vaccine when it is available to them.”
People are considered fully inoculated two weeks after their last dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, according to Austin Public Health officials.

Numbers tracking the coronavirus pandemic in the Austin area have stopped improving and could worsen, new projections show.
The projections released Friday by UT's COVID-19 Modeling Consortium, show lines flattening in the weeks ahead and possibly rising. The consortium reports a 32% probability that the pandemic will worsen here and a reproduction number of .91. A rate above 1 would mean the pandemic is growing in severity.
"We're seeing plateauing of the projections for hospital admissions, ICU admissions and hospital utilization," Austin Public Health interim Medical Director Dr. Mark Escott said in a briefing. "And as of today, entering the stage 2 is off of the projections through the first week of May."

Texas attorney general threatens to sue unless Austin leaders rescind mask requirement

Texas attorney general threatens to sue unless Austin leaders rescind mask requirement
AUSTIN, Texas — Texas’ top law enforcement officer has threatened to sue leaders in the state’s capital for maintaining local coronavirus mask requirements, saying they illegally defy the governor’s order ending a statewide mandate.
Attorney General Ken Paxton, in a letter to Austin Mayor Steve Adler and Travis County Judge Andy Brown, said he would sue unless mask mandates for the city and the county were rescinded by Wednesday at 6 p.m. local time.
But both local leaders say they won’t back down, setting the stage for the latest showdown in a long-running, nationwide clash over public health rules that often breaks along political lines. Sixteen states have no statewide mask rule.
