George Leighton Sterling and his wife, Maybelle, were pioneer missionaries who established the Seventh-day Adventist Church in the Cook Islands and the Marquesas Archipelago of the Pacific Ocean. They served there for 30 years, and also for 12 years in New Zealand and Australia, making a total of 42 years, followed by 18 years continued dedication in retirement.
Early Life
Born on December 27, 1885, in Otsego, Michigan, as the eldest of three sons, George Sterling grew up in an Adventist home and community. His grandfather, James G. Sterling, was a minister of the Church of Christ. He and his family met with Ellen and James White during their years in Rochester, New York, and in 1853 accepted “present truth.” From his grandfather and from his parents, Harvey and Emma Sterling, George grew up hearing stories of early Seventh-day Adventist history.

Olive May Fisher was distinguished for her services as a nurse and nurse educator in the highlands of Papua New Guinea (PNG)

Early Life and Training
Olive Fisher was born on a dairy farm at Mona Bush, nine miles out of Invercargill, New Zealand on January 19, 1914, the second child of William Earnest and May Elizabeth Fisher. There were to be six children in the family. Life was not easy on the farm and all the children learned to work hard, an attribute that stayed with Olive throughout her ninety-four years.
While in her early twenties, she trained as a nurse at the Sydney Sanitarium and Hospital, and graduated in December 1940. She subsequently trained in midwifery at the Royal Hospital for Women, Sydney, and nursing in this field became her passion. Olive was employed at the Warburton Sanitarium before returning to her alma mater to work in the obstetrics ward for four years.
