Wellington: Tsunami warnings were lifted across several South Pacific islands Friday allowing tens of thousands of evacuees to return home, as the risk from a series of powerful earthquakes appeared to ease.
Quakes of 7.3, 7.4 and 8.1 magnitude struck near New Zealand's remote Kermadec Islands in quick succession early Friday, followed by dozens of powerful aftershocks and a slew of tsunami warnings across the Pacific.
Thousands headed for high ground as waves of up to three metres (11 feet) had been predicted in New Caledonia and Vanuatu, with states and territories from New Zealand to Peru, Russia to Antarctica also put on high alert.

New Delhi: A massive 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck the South Pacific on Thursday, triggering a small tsunami in the region. Small islands in the area have reported no damages. According to reports, the earthquake struck after midnight, about 415 kilometres (258 miles) east of Vao in New Caledonia at a depth of 10 kilometres, according to the US Geological Survey.
The NWS Pacific Tsunami Warning Center of the US government said that "hazardous tsunami waves" were forecast for some coasts in the region. According to reports, a 0.3-metre tall wave struck the Fiji Island. "The seismology observatory upon its assessments has now verified and confirmed the cancellation of the warning and 'all clear information' (is) issued to the whole Fiji group," Fiji's Seismology Department said in a tweet.

An earthquake measuring 6.4 on the Richter scale jolted Indonesia's Bengkulu province, authorities said, adding that no casualties or damages were reported. The quake also had no potential to cause a tsunami, Alfath Abubakar, an official at the meteorology and geophysics agency, told Xinhua news agency.
The agency earlier reported that the quake was at 6.5-magnitude before revising it down to 6.4, he said.
The quake struck at 7.52 p.m. on Wednesday, with the epicentre at 80 km southwest Enggano Island and a depth at 10 km under seabed, Abubakar said.
The intensity of the quake was felt at II to III MMI (Modified Mercalli Intensity) in the island and II MMI in Bengkulu city and Kepahiang district, the official said.
