Digging for (and then eating!) Bamboo Shoots – Getting to the Root of the Matter! TAKEH NO KO HORI (竹の子堀)
4 April, 2021
The roots of a bamboo shoot I had just dug up- with a little help!
Bamboo grove in Onozaki, Tsukuba. Pleasing to the eye – as well as to the ear… clacking poly-rhythmically with each gentle breeze.
My first plate of TAKEH NO KO GOHAN (Bamboo shoot rice) of the year. The shoots were picked in Yamaguchi, Tsukuba

In April, bamboo shoots ( Take No Ko) hit the market across Japan, and become readily available even to those living in big cities, far from any actual bamboo groves. As these beloved symbols of the season are at their best in late April and May, the Japanese everywhere, look forward to enjoying  them prepared  in a variety of ways. I have been told by Japanese friends who have lived abroad in places with no bamboo, that they would daydream about eating  Take No Ko when spring arrived. That is how much this food is connected with the season.

TsukuBlog | Weeping Willows Exemplars Of Spring Greenery and Demarcators Of Boundaries Between Realms

The avenues and water-banks of Chang`an, the great capital of Tang China (618-907) were often lined with willows (yanagi 柳, in Japanese), as these trees were believed to represent  rejuvenative life forces and have the ability to repel evil and bad fortune. One reason for this is that their slender and elegant branches MOVE WITH THE BREEZE more actively than the branches of most other trees, thus connecting them with the bright and positive Yang (as opposed to the dark and negative Ying). This notion was reinforced by the light color of the willows wood , its bearing leaves earlier than other trees in the spring, and the fact that it was believed to be an antidote for scorpion stings. For New Year`s, the residents of The Tang capital would hang a willow branch above their homes` entranceways to keep bad energies out. The wispy, misty green which seemed to float above  the streets of the old capital in late March and early April as the willow`s leaves sprouted forth also came to epitomize SPRING`S GREENERY, as exemplified by  Su Tung-po`s poem-turned-adage – Naturally Willows Are Green (柳緑, in Chinese), and Flowers Are Red (花紅).

For St. Patrick`s Day – an Original Song (and a weekend of CANCELLED events in Tokyo)
17 March, 2021
Traditional Irish music for St. Patrick`s Day in front of Ars Halls in Tsukuba. Part of the Tsukuba St. Patrick`s Day Festival that was held every year from 2008 to 2012. With the Japanese love of festive foods and decoration, Celtic music, beer and whiskey (and dressing up in costumes, among the young) it`s not hard imagining that some day this festival will be as big as Halloween (also of Celtic origin) which has gained widespread popularity here in recent years.

TsukuBlog | Cries of- SAKURA might be mistaken, but don`t let that discourage you from savoring the beauty of Tsukuba`s anzu (apricot) blossoms

By Avi Landau
Not only are the blossoms of the anzu tree beautiful, but these trees which flower between the blooming periods of the UME (plum) and the Sakura, have had a very long history in Japan, after having been introduced to this country from its native  China sometime before the Heian Period (794-1192). While apricots also spread to the Caucasus and the Mediterranean, and remain a major fruit  for consumption in those areas today, these fruits , long called KARA MOMO (peaches of the Tang, or Chinese peaches) in Japan, were originally prized for the medicinal power of their seeds (especially for respiratory problems). This curative  was called kyo-nin 杏仁, which is now read as annin, and which has become an ingredient of the very popular desert dish annin dofu.

Challenge Art Festival in Tsukuba Shows that with Art, There Really Are No Limits (thru Sunday March 14th)
15 March, 2021

The theme of this year`s Challenge Art Festival featuring works created by the physically/mentally disabled in Tsukuba is “Amazing Limitlessness” – and that is really what one feels while exploring the galleries at the Tsukuba Art Museum during the show (which runs through 3 PM on Sunday March 14th)
By Avi Landau
Ideally, an art exhibition should excite and delight, thrill and chill, stimulate and fascinate – and  of course, get you to think about all sorts of things. The 20th Challenge Art Festival exhibit at the Tsukuba Art Museum succeeds in delivering on all these counts and has had me coming bad on several consecutive days for multiple viewings of these works – all created (you might or might not be surprised) at the 2 dozen or so different facilities around Tsukuba which are dedicated to the care of the mentally and or physically disabled.

Men Facing Tough Choices as WHITE DAY (March 14th) Draws Near

The Japanese calendar of annual events has gone through many changes over the centuries, with certain customs having variously been added, forgotten, or transformed into something unrecognizably different from what they had started out as. And while the origins and evolution of many of Japan’s most famous NENCHUGYOJI (年中行事、traditional annual events) remain obscured by the veil of their antiquity (by Japanese standards), the rise of one new, but now already widely established custom, occurred in the full light of the Late Showa Period (the late 70s-late 80s), and can be traced in great detail.
