On his quest to possess the mystical power of The Glow, a young kung fu master must contend with the self-appointed Shogun of Harlem and a wannabe gangster trying to break in to the music industry.
The first time I watched THE LAST DRAGON I was left absolutely awestruck. I needed to know how such a movie could exist. One that mixed kung fu, blaxpoitation funk culture, and nonstop R&B music. A piece of art that combined cultural/racial stereotypes and expectations in ways that were both offensive and occasionally profound. A movie where martial artists turn in to neon glowsticks when they believe in themselves.

Thankfully, most of its adult themes and R-rated jokes went over my head… or I just internalized and suppressed them to an unhealthy degree. (This would explain a lot.) I mean, I definitely remember having uncomfortable, confusing feelings about a sexed-up animated Kim Basinger after watching this…

Wait, what’s this about a pickaxe now?
Horror remakes were a dime a dozen in the 2000s. The year 2009 alone saw re-dos of FRIDAY THE 13TH, LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT, SORORITY ROW, and THE STEPFATHER, just to name a few. However, I’d go out on a limb and venture the resurrection of the cult 1981 Canadian horror flick MY BLOODY VALENTINE was the best of the bunch. Or considering the low bar those other movies set, at least the most memorable.

When someone recently suggested SILENT NIGHT, DEADLY NIGHT 2 for Awfully Good, I was shocked to realize that we’d never featured it here. It’s a classic Christmas B-movie for many reasons. The obvious one—and why this film is so famous–is the fact that it gave rise to the legendary “Garbage Day” meme from the mid-2000s. Not to age myself, but I still remember interrupting my college roommate’s World of Warcraft game to force him to watch the hilarious, out-of-context scene of a homeowner taking his trash to the curb, only to be randomly shot by a terrible actor maniacally yelling, “Gar-bage day!” It doesn’t sound like much, but it really is a remarkable moment in cinema history.
