Dan Carter has announced plans to run for a full term as Bethel first selectman on the Republican ticket. Carter became Bethel’s first selectman in February after defeating Democrat Rich Straiton in a special election. He now says that he loves the job and so he has decided to run for a full term. If reelected, Carter said improved communication and development would continue to be among his top priorities. He also said that another goal is developing Bethel’s economy. The Democrats have not yet announced a candidate for first selectman for the fall election.

Following the recent severe flooding and storms, Putnam County Executive Kevin Byrne has directed that efforts shift to focus on recovery. The County Executive’s office, the Putnam County Bureau of Emergency Services, the Putnam County Department of Public Works, and many other county employees have been working around the clock to assist in recovery efforts, as well as assess damage to infrastructure. Well, here we go again… The date for what will now be the third referendum on the town and school budgets in New Fairfield has been set. The proposed 2023-24 spending plans will once again go before the voters on Saturday, July 22nd. So far, voters in New Fairfield have soundly rejected the budget twice. In-person voting for the third referendum will be held at the New Fairfield Senior Center from 10am to 8pm on July 22nd. The Brookfield School Board will meet today, and among the topics on the table fro discussion, is the possible removal of a book that has only… so far anyway… been checked out from the Brookfield High School’s Electronic Library twice. Beginning today in New Milford, Aquarion Water Company will perform water infrastructure work. Crews will begin cleaning about 1,290 feet of water main on Harmony Trail. The project is part of an ongoing program to improve the water distribution system and to reduce leaks and water main breaks that can cause service interruptions. The project is expected to be completed by sometime next month, after which final street repairs and paving will be scheduled in coordination with the town. You can expect some minor traffic delays and possible detours between 7am and 5pm daily.
