Three people died in car crashes on state highways over Memorial Day weekend. Connecticut State Police released statistics that show they responded to 246 crashes statewide over the long holiday weekend, with two involving serious injuries and three reported fatalities. While those numbers are sobering, they are better than last year’s Memorial Day statistics, which included 359 crashes; 35 injuries; and 12 fatalities. The data includes activity from Friday at midnight up to 11:59 p.m. Sunday. State police reported an increase in seatbelt violations this year though, with 186 compared to...

In Bethel, an affordable housing proposal involving Whitney Road has been killed over concerns about dust. The 30-unit apartment complex was proposed for 17 Whitney Road in Bethel, but plans by the owners… Frank and Judy Saunders were rejected by the Planning and Zoning Commission. Those plans called for 42 one-bedroom units on the 1.7 acre property, but the were nixed over what was called “fugitive dust from an abutting property.” That property is Gault Stone and Landscape Supplies.

It comes as the state Department of Transportation replaces old signs to meet new Federal Highway Administration standards. The change will be gradual, but by the end of this decade, exit numbers will correspond with mile markers, and be based on how far they are from the beginning of the route within the state’s border…...

Some new information has been released surrounding a boat crash that happened last week on Candlewood Lake that resulted in two people being taken to the hospital. It happened near the Lattins Cove State Boat Launch on the morning of May 15th. A 19-foot bass boat with two people aboard, and 20-foot bowrider with one person on board, crashed near an island. The passenger in the bass boat was not hurt, but both boat operators were taken to the hospital… one suffering from a broken rib and pelvic injury, and other with cuts and scratches.
