A new pep in our step. For her, credit reflexology | Pamela’s Food Service Diary Updated Feb 28, 2021; Posted Feb 27, 2021 Marina Cafe in Great Kills at 35% capacity on Friday, Feb. 26, 2021. (Courtesy of Marina Cafe) Facebook Share STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. Turn that frown upside down and look on the bright side. Things aren’t perfect on the restaurant front but they’re certainly better. At 35% capacity right now in dining rooms, it’s a march into March with a new, collective pep in our step. Not to be a Debbie Downer, but the “imperfect” these days comes from a pattern established in prior times after capacities have been increased an uptick in inspections from various city and state departments. South Shore restaurant owners this past week have reported aggressive spot-checking on customer contact tracing records and bathroom cleaning logs. What Basilio Inn looks like at 35% capacity | The Dish Updated Feb 26, 2021; Posted Feb 26, 2021 Basilio Inn s owner, Maurizio Asperti, celebrates 100 years in South Beach. Here he is on the bocce court in back of the restaurant. (Staten Island Advance/Pamela Silvestri) Facebook Share STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. Drive too quickly around a bend on Father Capodanno Boulevard and it’s easy to miss Galesville Court in South Beach. That tiny block ends with a gravelly parking lot and Basilio Inn, a white-washed carriage house where Italian immigrants congregated while spending summers at Staten Island’s beaches. So it seems fitting on this historic day in the pandemic recovery when 35% dining begins to pay homage to an equally historic jewel in the borough. The Dish on this Friday brings us to Maurizio Asperti’s sunny spot with its bocce court and snow-capped gardens. ....
In these parts, it’s ‘Let’s eat!’ | From the editor Updated Feb 21, 2021; Facebook Share Hi Neighbor, Back in journalism’s Dark Ages, the pre-1990s, when newspapers were only printed on paper and didn’t appear magically on your phone, journalists were in the dark, too. Before the snide comments come flying – “You’re still in the dark you [insert degrading adjective here] know-nothing [Pick one: left-wing liberal, right-wing conservative] blowhard” – what I mean is we were in the dark about what people wanted to read. The Advance landed on your doorstep every day, you read what appealed to you, and we had little way of knowing. ....
100 seasons strong, Basilio Inn launches a new season a few weeks early Updated Feb 17, 2021; Facebook Share STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. The pandemic brought many “firsts” to historic Basilio Inn. For instance, this is the only time in the 100-year old restaurant’s history that it has opened for Valentine’s Day. Owner Maurizio Asperti typically spends the winter in Italy, another routine that has changed in this era of COVID-19. Asperti closed temporarily in mid-December, just before indoor dining officially shut down. The Galesville Court place comes back to life perennially by March 1 as one of the harbingers of spring on Staten Island. But this year the proprietor broke with tradition to get his crew back in action. ....
