Wild deer (Pudu puda) from Chile harbor a novel ecotype of Anaplasma phagocytophilum | Parasites & Vectors

Deer species play an important role in the enzootic cycles of several Anaplasma species. While in the Northern Hemisphere ticks of genus Ixodes are well recognized vectors of these intracellular bacteria, less is known regarding the biological cycles of Anaplasma spp. in South America. Using PCR protocols and Sanger sequencing, we assessed the presence of Anaplasma spp. in blood and ticks collected on a native deer species (Pudu puda) from southern Chile. Based on phylogenetic analyses of the 16S rRNA, gltA and groEL genes and calculation of average sequence divergence for groEL, our results bring to light a novel genovariant of Anaplasma phagocytophilum (named strain “Patagonia”). The strain represents a novel ecotype within the A. phagocytophilum species complex and was detected in both P. puda and their ticks. Using a larger matrix, denser taxon sampling and outgroup, our maximum-likelihood- and Bayesian-inferred phylogenies for groEL provide an accurate picture of the t ....

Associations between data-driven lifestyle profiles and cognitive function in the AusDiab study | BMC Public Health

Mounting evidence highlights the importance of combined modifiable lifestyle factors in reducing risk of cognitive decline and dementia. Several a priori additive scoring approaches have been established; however, limited research has employed advanced data-driven approaches to explore this association. This study aimed to examine the association between data-driven lifestyle profiles and cognitive function in community-dwelling Australian adults. A cross-sectional study of 4561 Australian adults (55.3% female, mean age 60.9 ± 11.3 years) was conducted. Questionnaires were used to collect self-reported data on diet, physical activity, sedentary time, smoking status, and alcohol consumption. Cognitive testing was undertaken to assess memory, processing speed, and vocabulary and verbal knowledge. Latent Profile Analysis (LPA) was conducted to identify subgroups characterised by similar patterns of lifestyle behaviours. The resultant subgroups, or profiles, were then used to further ....

Frontiers | Octocorals in the Gulf of Aqaba exhibit high photosymbiont fidelity

Symbiotic associations, widespread in terrestrial and marine ecosystems, are of considerable ecological importance. Many tropical coral species are holobionts, formed by the obligate association between a cnidarian host and endosymbiotic dinoflagellates of the family Symbiodiniaceae. The latter are abundant on coral reefs from very shallow water down to the upper mesophotic zone (30-70 meters). The research on scleractinians has revealed that the photosymbiont lineages present in the cnidarian host play an important role in the coral’s ability to thrive under different environmental conditions, such as light regime and temperature. However, little is known regarding octocoral photosymbionts, and in particular regarding those found deeper than 30 meters. Here, we used ribosomal (ITS2) and chloroplast (23S) markers to uncover, for the first time, the dominant Symbiodiniaceae taxa present in 19 mesophotic octocoral species (30-70 meters depth) from the Gulf of Aqaba/ Eilat (northern Red ....
