Andrew Delke reaches plea agreement in Daniel Hambrick's death: Attorneys

A white Nashville police officer charged with murder in the fatal shooting of a Black man reached a deal with prosecutors and will plead guilty to manslaughter, according to an attorney representing the victim's family.
Officer Andrew Delke will serve a three-year sentence for shooting Daniel Hambrick three times in the back during a July 2018 foot chase, according to the family attorney. Prosecutors have not confirmed the details of the deal.
The shooting, caught on video, shook the community and sparked a passionate, unresolved debate over police violence, systemic racism and the true meaning of public safety.
Delke maintained his innocence for years, saying he shot in self defense after he saw Hambrick, 25, holding a gun. He will appear in court Friday morning to confirm a guilty plea, according to his defense attorney David Raybin.

Police, community leaders weigh in on how Nashville protests peacefully

Nashville is no stranger to police brutality protests.
In recent years, people have marched in the streets and camped outside the halls of power. They carried signs, shouted chants and disrupted the order of the day. Protesters then and still do want people to pay attention to the problem and the trauma, and they want change.
The majority of protests in Nashville occur without incident although the city saw an exception last year. Pastors, a protest leader and police shared their thoughts on why most demonstrations in the city tend to be peaceful.
Pastor Kelli X, who leads The Village Church, said everyone in Nashville is connected to someone. The connectedness of the city creates space for peace, she said.

24 hours of peace rally calls for end to violence in Nashville

A 24-hour demonstration to celebrate community and peaceful coexistence, and gather against violence kicked off Friday in Nashville.
The effort, "24 Hour Display of Power: 24 Hours of Complete Peace," will focus on  solidarity and building power amongst community members in an effort to take back the city, community organizer Gicola Lane said Friday.
A rally and march in connection with the demonstration are slated for Saturday.
"The goal is to really just call for absolute peace across the city," Lane said. "Our community is in pain. We have experienced a large influx of violence from multiple directions. We've lost a lot of people to both community and police violence.... We're asking the entire city to display unity."

Why Black pastors are supporting the COVID-19 vaccines from the pulpit

Smith knows some people are apprehensive about getting inoculated and he respects everyone's personal choices, but he hopes his example will encourage others, especially those in the Black community, to get the vaccine as well. Smith, 65, is a caretaker for his mother and said he was able to sign up to be immunized when her vaccine appointment was scheduled.
"I did want others to know that I'm comfortable taking it," Smith said in an interview with The Tennessean. "I do hope and encourage people to take it so that we can get this pandemic under control and begin to find a new norm for life and for living."
