Non-subscribers Fight for the world as it should be Posted Betty Firth Betty Firth I have been reading Michelle Obama’s book, Beloved, and waxing nostalgic about what was and what could have been. When Barack Obama was elected in 2008, I thought we, as a country, were finally taking a step up on the evolutionary scale, finally living up to the ideals that are the underpinnings of this country. I loved reading Michelle’s words about struggling to balance the demands of politics. She wanted to nurture and protect her family, but as a citizen, she knew that America needed and deserved to have the man with the “noble heart” in the Oval Office. She deplored the hype and pretension, but she wanted so much to have a positive effect during Obama’s campaign. She said she did that best by revealing her real self, making personal connections with people she met in small groups and in large crowds. Facing the small-minded sniping about her, her clothes, and every word she uttered, she wanted to articulate who she really was and to show the world an intimate view of Barack.

Non-subscribers Listening until you actually hear someone Posted Betty Firth Betty Firth Conversations, discussions, arguments, rants, they’re all happening all over the country concerning the events of Jan. 6 in our nation’s capital. As a person who’s always trying to figure out what makes people tick (including myself), I have to say that I don’t get it; that is, I don’t get how so many people could disagree with me so completely, because I think I’m reasonable, fairly well-informed, and thoughtful (and right). However, what I’ve learned is that everybody else thinks that, too, about themselves. It’s like the sense of humor thing and the driving thing; I’ve heard that everyone thinks they have a good sense of humor and everyone thinks that they’re good drivers. Well, clearly, there are a lot of bad drivers out there running off the road and crashing into other cars or just causing havoc on the highways, and there are plenty of people who don’t get my sense of humor. Since I know I have a good sense of humor, that must indicate we can’t all be right.

Non-subscribers The long and the short of it, putting life into writing Posted Betty Firth Betty Firth As long as I can remember, I have had a preference for longhand and a fascination with writing instruments: fountain pens, calligraphy pens, gel pens, feather quills, markers, crayons, chalk, pencils, brush tip pens and brushes of all types, from 4” wide to liners, riggers, and daggers. The variety of possible marks to be made are beyond counting. Yet we voluntarily limit ourselves to stiff symbols on a screen or printed out to paper. With thousands of font choices, the world is dominated by Helvetica, Arial, Times, Courier, and others that look pretty much the same to the average onlooker.
