Juan Carlos Perlas,Antique Provincial Tourism and Cultural Affairs supervising administrative officer, said on Thursday (July 14) the sculptures will be installed at the Malandog Esplanade in Hamtic town.(Photo courtesy of Antique Provincial Tourism and Cultural Affairs Office) SAN JOSE DE BUENAVISTA, Antique - The Antique provincial government has commissioned an artist to make ultra-size sculptures of the 10 Bornean datus (chieftains) to erect a lasting monument to the country's pre-colonial ancestors. Juan Carlos Perlas, Antique Provincial Tourism and Cultural Affairs supervising administrative officer, said in an interview on Thursday they have commissioned artist John Alaban, who has roots in Culasi, Antique, to create concrete statues with bronze coating to be installed at the Malandog Esplanade in Hamtic town, where the chieftains' sailboats were believed to have first landed. "There is a need to create a lasting monument to our pre-Hispanic ancestors at the traditional site of their landing on the shore of Antique so our future generation would be proud of our province's legacy as the cradle of civilization in Panay island," Perlas said. He added that the monument was also part of the vision of Antique Governor Rhodora J. Cadiao to make the province a preferred travel destination among domestic and international tourists through the development of various tourism sites. Perlas said Alaban delivered on July 13, the first five of the 10 statues with a height of 15 feet, taller than the war memorial sculpture of General Douglas MacArthur in Palo, Leyte. The delivered statues of the first five Bornean datus were that of Sumakwel, Bangkaya, Dumalugdog, Lubay and Puti, the leader of the chieftains. The sculptures of the remaining five datus yet to be delivered are those of Paiburong, Dumangsil, Balensusa, Paduhinogan, and Dumangsol. Alaban, based on the interview of the Antique Provincial Information Office, said it took almost six months of extensive cultural and historical research to be able to come up with the concept and another month to be able to finish one statue. He is proud to be commissioned to do the project because he was able to contribute something to the home province of his mother. "We expect to have the final installation of the statues just before the annual Binirayan Festival in December," Alaban said in an interview. Antique's provincial festival Binirayan was also coined from the Kinaray-a word "Biray" or a fleet of sailboats approaching the shores of Malandog. According to legend, the 10 datus from Borneo led by Datu Puti arrived in Panay Island sometime in the 13th century. Panay Island is now comprised of the provinces of Antique, Iloilo, Aklan, and Capiz. (PNA) }

Valentin Grasparil Hall inside the Antique Police Provincial Office in San Jose de Buenavista on July 8, 2022. Antique Governor Rhodora J. Cadiao on Tuesday (July 12) expressed her gladness over the appointments of De Lemos and newly designated Energy Secretary Raphael Perpetuo Lotilla.(Photo courtesy of Vice Governor Edgar Denosta) SAN JOSE DE BUENAVISTA, Antique - Political leaders of the province of Antique are elated with the appointments of their two province mates to key posts under the administration of President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. Governor Rhodora J. Cadiao on Tuesday expressed her pride and happiness that the President has shown confidence in the abilities of Antiquenos when he designated Raphael Perpetuo Lotilla as energy secretary and Medardo De Lemos by appointing him as the officer-in-charge of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), through Department of Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla. "For a small province of Antique, I am very happy as governor that two Antiquenos had been given key positions in the government," she said. Cadiao added that the Antiquenos, despite coming from a province not so well-known before unlike the big cities and provinces in the country, are hardworking, resourceful, intelligent, and could be trusted and could be assets. Antique Provincial Board Member Pio Jessielito Sumande said in a separate interview that Lotilla is an awardee of the "Bugal kang Antique" or Antique's Pride Award, which is the most distinguished award given by the provincial government during the yearly Binirayan Festival celebration. "Lotilla, as the energy secretary, could really help address the energy problem in the country," Sumande said. Antique, in particular, has many other sources of energy like solar, wind, and hydro that if harnessed could reduce the electricity rate, he cited. De Lemos, on the other hand, has a good track record and had long been serving as deputy of the NBI. "Antique has now a full-blown NBI office because of Senator Loren Legarda, who is the former congresswoman of the province, and De Lemos," he said. He said the NBI in Antique before was only a satellite office but now has its own building with equipment that could process application of clearances and perform other services like cybercrime investigation. Antique's Binirayan Fest 2021 brings message of hope

PRESENTATION OF BEAUTIES. The presentation of 18 ladies vying for the title Miss Binirayan Festival 2021 forms part of the activities during Wednesday evening's (Dec. 1, 2021) opening salvo. Antique Governor Rhodora Cadiao, in her message during the opening, said the province is holding the event this year due to the declining number of Covid-19 cases.(Photo courtesy of Antique PIO) SAN JOSE DE BUENAVISTA, Antique- Antique's Binirayan Festival opened on Wednesday evening and brought a message of hope to residents amid a drop in the number of coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) cases and loosening of social restrictions. Governor Rhodora Cadiao, who led the opening salvo of the Binirayan Festival, said Covid-19 cases in the province are declining which made it possible to hold the event. "The Antiquenos, during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, had shown enough courage and strength that we could now confidently say we are ready to face any similar challenge that might come our way," she said in her message. Antique is entering into the new normal, hence activities for the festival until December 19 will already be a combination of virtual and face-to-face. Last year, the province had to cancel all crowd-drawing activities such as the Search for Lin-ay or Miss Binirayan because of the threat of the virus. Juan Carlos Perlas, the Antique Provincial Tourism and Cultural Affairs Officer (APTCAO), in a separate interview Thursday, said all the 18 towns of the province sent their candidates for the beauty pageant. They were presented to the large crowd that gathered at the capitol ground during the festivities' opening salvo. Perlas said other activities are lined up until the December 19 culminating activity. He said there are 50 stalls set up for the Fiesta Binirayan 2021 where people could buy various souvenir items such as handwoven fabric or patadyong t-shirts, shoes, and bags. "People could also dine at the Fiesta Binirayan 2021 provided they are fully vaccinated against Covid-19," Perlas said. The Tanuman Festival or Agricultural Fair also started its run on Wednesday evening. Other activities for the festival included the floats parade of local government units (LGUs) on December 12 with floats display until December 18; the coronation of the Lin-ay Kang Antique on December 13; and Binirayan Sikad Lagaw or Bike Race and Pet Day on December 18; and trail run from December 18 to 19. The celebration will culminate with the Malay Ati Competition or tribe competition of municipalities on December 19. (PNA) }

Antique capital to host statues of 10 Bornean datus

BORNEAN DATUS. Antique Provincial Tourism and Cultural Affairs Officer Juan Carlos Perlas presents the province's tourism development plan on Oct. 18, 2021. Perlas said in an interview Friday (Oct. 22, 2021) that they are planning to put up statues of the 10 Borneandatuswho first settled in Malandog, Antique before May 2022.(PNA photo by Annabel Consuelo J. Petinglay) SAN JOSE DE BUENAVISTA, Antique - The statues of the 10 Bornean datus (chieftains), the first Malay ancestors in the country, will soon be erected in Barangay Malandog in this capital town where they first settled long before the Spanish colonization. "The statues will depict the arrival of the first Malay ancestors in Barangay Malandog in order to settle there," said Antique Provincial Tourism and Cultural Affairs Officer Juan Carlos Perlas in an interview Friday. The project, which is included in the provincial government's tourism development plan, is targeted to start before May 2022. It will be funded with PHP5 million from the Internal Revenue Allocation (IRA) of the provincial government. Perlas said they will be made of cement standing at 15 feet tall, similar to the statue of General Douglas MacArthur at the Leyte Landing Memorial in Palo, Leyte. These will be built along the shoreline of Malandog, where the re-enactment of Antique's Binirayan Festival is always being held before the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic, depicting the datus walking towards the shorelines. "The statues will be an added attraction to the Sunset View Park that will also be constructed in the area," he said. The Sunset View Park is proposed to be constructed by next year to become a new tourism destination, especially for those who wanted to stroll in the afternoon and see the beautiful sunset in the area. The park will be close to the PHP50-million two-story Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO) now being constructed and expected to be finished before the end of this year.
