While some Catholics in the Albany, New York diocese questioned the propriety of a church funeral for former Bishop Howard Hubbard, who had contracted an illicit civil marriage shortly before his death, relatives of the deceased prelate issued a public statement protesting the “detestable” homily preached by Bishop Edward Scharfenberger at the funeral.

At the funeral Mass for Bishop Emeritus Howard Hubbard, Bishop Edward Scharfenberger of Albany said that there is “much to be celebrated,” from Hubbard’s life, while also acknowledging that his predecessor “was not an uncontroversial figure at times.”

The youngest American to be made a bishop, he died while still defending himself against allegations of sexual abuse.

COMMENTARY: After a retirement marked with scandal and shame, Bishop Emeritus Howard Hubbard of Albany died Aug. 19. His funeral will be Aug. 25.
