I Fell Down a Bears Schedule Rabbit Hole and Other Bears Bullets

Looking for a song to lead off my summer playlist.
Is this the one?
•   I hadn’t thought about it this way:
I suspect the NFL actually wanted the Bengals/Bears game early in the schedule because they new it'd go from Dalton -> Fields at some point and that game's narrative is more interesting if Dalton is still the starter.
•   The Bears must straddle a fine line here. They spent the offseason publicly pushing Andy Dalton as their starting quarterback. Dalton also said the team gave him assurances he would be in that role. I can imagine that the team wants to give Dalton a fair chance at the gig, if only for the sake of being true to its sales pitch. However, it always seemed as if Dalton knew there was a real chance he could be replaced by a draft pick. And because of that, I can see the Bears pulling out from Dalton quick if he isn’t cutting it. In the end, I really think “we’ll all know” when it’s Justin Fields’ turn to be QB1. And I believe how the QBs perform this summer will set the stage for how the chips fall when the season kicks off.

I Cannot Stop Having Fun With The Javy Play

There was so much random fun stuff and quoting and thinking and what-have-you about Javy Báez’s magical baserunning play yesterday that I wanted to gather some of it up here. I’d started to incorporate into the Bullets, and it was just way too much. That tends to happen when you’re talking about a play about which every observer remarks, “I have never seen anything like that before.”
A note up front to the fun-haters: Everyone knows the first baseman screwed up badly. But do you really think Javy Báez played
zero part in baiting him into that screw-up? Do you really think there was absolutely no reason that the entire Pirates bench wasn’t screaming ‘first base’? Or that the catcher didn’t simply take the throw and immediately indicate first base, rather than trying to tag Contreras? Or that two defenders simply dropped the ball as Javy came upon them? There are multiple factors here, and at least one of them is that Javy just does crazy shit that throws guys off their kilter in the moment.

Joc Pederson's Offense, Mustache Improving

That comment was actually about Pederson’s slow start to the season offensively. But as a fellow below-average mustache grower (35 wMG+), I can feel Pederson’s pain. And, apparently, he’s heard the haters: “Don’t come at me like that,’’ he said. “Look at that thing. Sorry, I can’t grow a great one. This is all I’ve got. It’s hard work. It’s there, though. I need the right lighting.”
Even his wife is giving him the business: “She’s on me,” Pederson said with a laugh via the Chicago Sun Times. “I better not go 0-fer.” Or he’ll have to shave it off.

Cubs Roster Moves: Nico Hoerner to the IL, Rafael Ortega Called Up, Shelby Miller DFA'd

Nico Hoerner, who hit the deck hard running through first base last night, is heading to the injured list with a hamstring strain and outfielder Rafael Ortega is coming up to replace him. However, to make room on the 40-man roster, the Cubs have designated Shelby Miller for assignment.
Cubs place Nico Hoerner on the 10-day IL (left hamstring strain). They select Rafael Ortega from Triple-A.
Shelby Miller activated from 10-day IL and designated for assignment.
The Cubs now have seven days to trade, waive, or release Miller. But considering how he’s reportedly looked (and felt) during his rehab stint at Triple-A Iowa, I wouldn’t expect him to make it through waivers. That could mean, then, that the Cubs are actively trying to pursue a trade right now. So we’ll have to follow that closely as it plays out.

Nico Hoerner Just Went Down Hard After Crossing First Base, and He’s Out of the Game (UPDATE: Hamstring)
Nico Hoerner just went down, badly, after crossing first base while trying to beat out a bunt attempt. I’m not keen on speculating on the injury until we have the facts, but it didn’t look good, with Hoerner grabbing at the back of his left leg. Hoerner stayed down for a while, was in obvious pain, and exited the game very gingerly.

Gotta Take Care of Business: Cubs at Pirates, May 25-27, 2021

The Cubs have already played the Pirates 9 times this season, and they’ll get three more against them this week (that’s 12 matchups before the end of May!). Normally, that many games against the Pirates can do wonders for your record, but so far, the Cubs (5-4) have managed to win just one more than they’ve lost.
With that in said, the Cubs have become a fundamentally different team here lately, with an offense that’s clicking and a bullpen that’s humming. Even a few members of the starting rotation has taken some important steps forward. So while I’m not exactly expecting the Cubs to sweep the Pirates, I do think we should *expect* them to take 2 out of 3. They have to take care of business. Because after that, the schedule starts getting *very* tough: Reds (3 games), Padres (3), Giants (4), Padres (3), Cardinals (3), and Mets (4) coming up in that order. Oh, and then it’s the Dodgers (4) and Brewers (3) to close out the month.

Getting the Energy Back, Davies Results, Busy Bullpen, Tepera, and Other Cubs Bullets

We knew that fans being at sporting events was important to the experience for those of us watching at home, but I don’t think I realized just how important until we experienced last year, and now get to contrast it with this year as fans come back. It’s just such a better experience hearing and seeing the fans there in St. Louis – yes, even St. Louis – and then feeling the energy reflected from the players.
•   Speaking of that kind of return to normalcy on the field, the Cubs are benefiting from it in another way, according to David Ross (Sun-Times): “Confidence is very important in our game and remembering how good of a baseball player you are,” Ross said. “I think KB has said it. . . . I can’t speak for players, but last year I felt there was such an anxiety to get going. I really feel like this season just continues to go and we’re in May and we’re like, ‘Wow, we still have a long way to go.’ This feels a little more normal to those guys, and they settled and stopped putting so much pressure on themselves to do this or that, and they understand, ‘I’ve got four or five at-bats every day.'”

I am on my way to Chicago for the game today, and I’m starting to get that annoying anxiety feeling – not about the game, itself, or even the pandemic stuff. Instead, I think it’s just that it’s my first time back to Wrigley Field in so long that I want it to be such a good experience – I’m almost certainly overhyping it in my own mind, and so you get that anxiety feeling that it’s gonna get mucked up somehow. I’ve been waiting for this for a year and a half, you know? Nothing mess it up for me!
