Southold Election Slates Are Set

Southold Town Democrats announced Tuesday evening that their 2018 Town Supervisor candidate, Greg Doroski, and former Mattituck School Board member Brian Mealy will be their candidates for town board this November.
Incumbent town board members Republican Bob Ghosio and Conservative Jim Dinizio have declined to run again, and the Southold GOP ticket will be led by town board candidates Greg Williams, who owns Country Time Cycle in Mattituck, and Sannino Vineyard owner Anthony Sannino.

The Southold Democrats announced their slate after a Zoom convention on Tuesday, March 2, while the Southold Republicans announced their slate after a nominating meeting held at the Southold American Legion Feb. 23. ....

Hefty price tag for Justice Court as renovations said to cost at least $5.7M

A preliminary look into three options for the future of Southold Town Hall and Justice Court facility recently completed by the town engineer revealed one common thread: all will come with a hefty price tag.
The first proposal presented by town engineer Michael Collins at a work session Tuesday explored modifying a portion of the annex building to serve as a court complex, as originally intended, would cost approximately $5.7 million.
Consolidating town hall operations and moving them to the annex building would involve a complete overhaul and cost approximately $8 million, while constructing a new building behind the existing town hall could total $9.5 million. ....

Town Board hires Lexipol in split vote to provide policy updates, training for police department

In a split vote Tuesday, the Southold Town Board voted to hire Lexipol, a California-based consulting company, to provide policy updates and training to the town police department.
Council members Jim Dinizio, Jill Doherty, Bob Ghosio and Louisa Evans voted in favor of the agreement, which has an initial one-year term and will cost the town $27,203. Supervisor Scott Russell and Councilwoman Sarah Nappa each voted against the measure after a motion to table by Ms. Nappa was rejected 3-3. ....

In Southold, a revived call for solutions at Goldsmith Inlet
As Goldsmith Inlet continues to fill with sand in a fast-changing, dynamic environment, water quality has suffered.
Recent sampling in the area, which includes nearby Autumn Pond, shows poor oxygen levels, likely a result of limited tidal flow of seawater into the inlet. Fish can’t enter the area to spawn and high water levels in Autumn Pond threaten to introduce contamination from nearby septic systems.
Call it a case of dredging déjà vu.
“It fills up, we go and we dredge if possible, and then we wait for the next storm to close it in again, rinse and repeat,” said Glenn Goldsmith, current president of the town’s Board of Trustees. “We need more tools in the tool box,” he said, echoing calls from Southold Town Supervisor Scott Russell for a more comprehensive solution to decades of problems. ....

Parking study seeks solutions for traffic problems in New Suffolk

The words “New Suffolk” and “traffic” don’t seem to go together, but a study conducted over two weekends in July does show that the hamlet has a serious parking problem.
Members of the Southold Town Board, outside consultants and some hamlet residents came together via Zoom last Wednesday evening to discuss the ongoing New Suffolk Comprehensive Parking Study.
The central issue of the town-sponsored traffic study is that on summer weekends, visitors have been parking on residential streets in the hamlet and walking to the town beach facing Robins Island. ....
