Memorial of Maj Khathing who set up Indian control over Tawang to come up – The Munsif Daily

Itanagar, Feb 14 : A memorial will be set up in Arunachal Pradesh’s Tawang to keep alive the sacrifice and bravery of Major Ralengnao ‘Bob’ Khathing, who had established Indian administrative control over the border town 70 years ago.
Before February 1951, Tawang, despite being part of India since 1914 through the Simla Convention, was administered from Lhasa.
Officials said that it was a historic “Valentine’s Day” celebration here at Tawang – when respect and love showered to late Major Khathing – as the works for establishing the memorial were formally began on Sunday.
Union Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said he would request the Union Education Ministry to include the story of Major Khathing in school text books.

Major Bob Khathing: A soldier, civil servant and diplomat

This is the story of an unsung hero, Maj Ralengnao (Bob) Khathing, a Tangkhul Naga from Manipur. He was the first person of tribal origin to serve as an ambassador for India and played a vital role in integrating Tawang with the union of India.
Maj Khathing was born on 8 February, 1912, in Ukhrul in Manipur and was the first tribal from Manipur to graduate. During World War-II he became the first Manipuri to get the King’s Commission. He was commissioned into the 19th Hyderabad Regiment (later the 7th Kumaon Regiment) and later served under the then Major Thimmayya (later chief of army staff and commander-in-chief, Indian Army) at the Regimental Training Centre, Agra.
