Doha: Croatia defeated Qatar 26:24 in the third round of Group C games of the 27th IHF Men’s Handball World Championship - Egypt 2021 at Alexandria’s Borg Al Arab Sports Hall yesterday.
Croatia got in front in the first period with a score of 13:11 lead over Qatar, in a tense 30 minutes . The Vatreni continued putting on a superb show in the second period and snatched the victory over Qatar with a score of 26:24. ....

Doha: Qatar coach Valero Rivera yesterday expressed his delight at the performances of his players ahead of their third and final Group match of the 27th IHF Men’s Handball World Championship - Egypt 2021. Asian giants Qatar booked a place in the main round of the 32-team event and will take on European giants Croatia today. Qatar started their Group campaign with a thrilling 30-25 win over Angola at Borg Al Arab Sports Hall, the designated venue for Group C matches. On Sunday, Qatar clinched a thrilling 31-29 victory over Japan, who stunned two-time Olympic champions and former World Champions Croatia with a 29-29 draw in their opening match. ....

Hungary among teams to reach main round of Handball World Championships

Hungary were among the teams to reach the main round of the International Handball Federation (IHF) Men’s Handball World Championship after a comprehensive win against Uruguay.
The Magyars secured their second win from as many group games as they overcame the South Americans 44-18 at the Dr Hassan Moustafa Indoor Sports Complex in the 6
th of October City in Group A.
That was the only match played in the group today following the cancellation of the fixture between Cape Verde and Germany because positive coronavirus tests left the African nation unable to field a team.
Germany were awarded a 10-0 win by walkover while Cape Verde called up extra players to ensure they were not thrown out of the competition – which could happen if they miss three matches. ....

Doha: Reigning Asian champions Qatar yesterday moved into the second round of the 27th IHF Men’s Handball World Championship - Egypt 2021 after a thrilling 31-29 victory over Japan at Borg Al Arab Sports Hall, Alexandria.
Qatar goalkeeper Danijel Saric, who didn’t have a save in the first half, stopped a Japan penalty one minute before the final buzzer to lift Qatar to their second straight win in Group C. It was another outstanding performance by the Valero Rivera-coached side in the final session that handed them a close win over their spirited Asian rivals, who stunned European giants Croatia with a 29-29 draw in their opening match. ....

Hosting major sports tournaments can confer prestige on a country, but in the case of Egypt, the 2021 Handball World Championship will do little to repair its relations with the US, Italy and states in the Gulf, argues James M. Dorsey in this analysis.

Egyptian general-turned president Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi sees the 2021 men’s handball world championship in Cairo and Alexandria as an opportunity to put his best foot forward at a time when Egypt’s relations with its closest regional and global partners are encountering substantial headwinds.
Successful hosting of the championship, the first to involve 32 rather than 24 competing teams, would also serve to  counter criticism of the government’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic. Egyptian health minister Hala Zayed recently admitted that many more Egyptians contracted the virus than the government has so far reported.
