When Nicéphore Niépce created the first surviving photograph in 1826-1827, the process took over eight hours.
The resulting image of the view from his window at Les Gras was blurry and grainy with shadows and reflections in opposing directions. But for the first time the image was captured permanently, and photography was born.
With time and refinement, the process became quicker, so when daguerreotype portrait photographs started becoming popular and affordable in the early 1840s the sitter only had to wait a minute and a half for their likeness to be captured, depending on the amount of light in the studio.

and phil rutger, white house bureau chief for the "washington post." thanks to both of you for being here on such an important day. chris, i want to start with you and just get your reaction to what you just heard from the president. this was a candidate trump who ran on a platform of supporting the nra. now we're seeing him shift a little bit. he says, look, he does support strengthened background checks. he did call for new regulations when it comes for bump stocks and now this new development of potentially increasing the age limit when it comes to buying ar-15s. do you take him at his word? is that a significant shift? >> the devil of these issues is in the details. certainly having been at the rally yesterday and seeing about 10,000 people who came last minute to participate in that rally, i think he's seeing a ground swell of upset in this country and tremendous concern about the lack of effective regulation that we have in place. we at brady stand for really three things around this that we want to see happen.
