A changing landscape: How the pandemic has altered the look of downtown Northampton

Published: 4/9/2021 2:56:31 PM
NORTHAMPTON — Longtime downtown business owner Bill Muller thought he had a plan — consolidate his Northampton businesses, Guild Art Supply and Pierce’s Frameshop, and his Easthampton printing business, Big Wheel Press, into one space in the old Serio’s Market storefront on State Street in Northampton.
The spot was ideal, complete with parking. “We were working on floor plans and everything,” he said. “Then COVID hit.”
Surrounded by so much economic uncertainty, Muller scrapped those plans entirely. Instead of staying in downtown Northampton, where he’s run Guild Art Supply for 37 years, he made the tough decision last year to move the store and framing shop to his press space in Easthampton.

NORTHAMPTON — Packard’s, which billed itself as “The Bar that Never Closes,” will reopen March 18 after a winter-long COVID shutdown.
But Packard’s outspoken owner, Robert McGovern, said Monday the downtown economy is very different now from a year ago and has even changed since he closed Packard’s in November.

When Nicéphore Niépce created the first surviving photograph in 1826-1827, the process took over eight hours.
The resulting image of the view from his window at Les Gras was blurry and grainy with shadows and reflections in opposing directions. But for the first time the image was captured permanently, and photography was born.
With time and refinement, the process became quicker, so when daguerreotype portrait photographs started becoming popular and affordable in the early 1840s the sitter only had to wait a minute and a half for their likeness to be captured, depending on the amount of light in the studio.

NORTHAMPTON — Seven restaurants and bars entered a lottery for a liquor license held by the city’s License Commission on Wednesday and one lucky winner emerged.
“We choose at random out of an old-school bingo spinner from the city clerk,” said Annie Lesko, the clerk for the License Commission, who also works in the mayor’s office.
India House on State Street was chosen as the winner at the commission’s meeting Wednesday. The license, which allows bars and restaurants to serve beer, wine and liquor, was previously used by the Sierra Grille on Strong Avenue before it closed this fall.

Bistro Les Gras in Northampton closing after 12 years

Bistro Les Gras in Northampton closing after 12 years as COVID-19 wounds restaurant industry
Updated Dec 16, 2020;
NORTHAMPTON — Bistro Les Gras, the French-style farm-to-table restaurant on West Street, will not reopen this spring after what had been announced as a temporary closure due to COVID-19.
Instead, owners Daniel and Elizabeth Martinez said Wednesday they will not renew their lease. The restaurant is closing after 12 years.
“A lot of thoughts crossed our mind as we came to this decision‚” they wrote on the restaurant’s Facebook page. “We thought of our amazing staff over the years, and how many have become some of our dearest friends. We reminisced about all the families we have had the pleasure to watch grow over the years. We thought of our amazing regulars who have become as much a part of our daily lives as our own families, perhaps even more so. It became easy to see that Bistro Les Gras belongs to all of these people as much as it belongs to us. We could not be more proud of that.”
