well, now to a cnn exclusive. some of the classified documents found in the indiana home of the former vice president mike pence were briefing memos meant to prepare him for foreign trips. cnn's evan perez has been following the developments. so what more do we know about the documents found at pence's home? >> reporter: well, victor w, wh we know is these documents are in lower classification than what we've seen in the biden investigation, the investigation of classified documents that were found at the home and of the private office of president biden and of course, the hundreds of classified documents that were found in mar-a-lago at the home of former president trump. we know that the documents were described as briefing memos before the vice president was meeting foreign officials on foreign trips and so that is a very common thing that would be
that reporting. and we also have new exclusive reporting and new details about the contents of the classified documents that were found at mike pence's indiana home. multiple sorts telling cnn that the roughly 12 classified materials found at the former vice president's residence included background materials, briefing memos for his foreign trips, cnn's paula reid is tracking all of this. so, paula, this fills in a bit of a gap in the details about what these documents really were, what else do we know? >> reporter: it's a great reporting, abby, from jamie gangel who learned that these classified documents were likely part of background briefing materials that the vice president had received in preparation for foreign trips. as you know, when you go on these trips you often get materials that include stuff like basic biographical information about the people you're meeting with but they can also include more sensitive information and it appears that's what happened here though there's no indication that any of these materials had the highest levels of
across the country. i'm fredricka whitfield. thanks so much for being with me today. jim acosta is next. you're live in the "cnn newsroom." i'm jim acosta in washington. we begin with new details on president biden's classified documents saga. the president's special counsel confirming that several additional pages with classified material were discovered at biden's wilmington home thursday evening. the documents in addition to ten documents discovered in a biden affiliated think tank. a small closet to the left of biden's desk and storage spaces in the adowning conference room including top-secret material and dealt with matters involving ukraine, iran and the united kingdom. also a memo from biden to then president obama as well as two briefing memos prepared for biden's phone calls with british
he said, i didn't even though these documents were there. you've got a theory about how this could've happened. >> absolutely. i think a lot of people, ali, are wondering, how in the world could president biden not -- have documents in his personal possession? it's important for people to remember that a couple days before donald trump was -- then vice president biden was actually on an international trip. he was in ukraine, and before that, he was in davos. all this happening while his team is trying to close down and pack up his office, there are briefing memos that need to be put together, things like. that those briefing memos would be classified because they would contain information about world leaders and other countries, and one could imagine coming off of that trip just having to be out of not just the white house offices, but the naval observatory as well, the residents of the vice president, things are getting packed up, and documents could have been comingled in that

insiders are. the voters might just see two special counsels and call it a wash. >> they could. and in that case they are. it's two special counsels. they made sure that the one appointed to oversee biden was appointed himself by trump. this has been done very carefully. we also have exclusive reporting on what's in the documents. u.s. intelligence memos, briefing materials involving ukraine, iran, and the uk. briefing memos for phone calls with prime minister of poland and the former minister of the uk. and a memo with former president obama. how much does what's in the documents themselves matter? >> at some level it doesn't really matter as long as we're talking about top-secret information which cnn is reporting that this is classified as top-secret and top-secret sci, which is an even higher level. for that purpose, that means that the intelligence community has deemed that if it were to get out, that information could
presi presidency. included in those ten classified documents were intelligence memos and briefing memos relighting to ukraine, iran, the united kingdom, a memo that then-vice president biden had written to president obama as well as briefing memos preparing the former vice president at the time for phone calls with the prime minister of the united kingdom as well as the president of the european council. this was all discovered back on november 2nd when the president's private lawyers were searching that penn biden center office and certainly there are so many more questions about how exactly these documents got to those places. but now we have that new reporting that there is about approximately 20 classified documents found between the office as well as the president's residence up in delaware. >> yeah, a much smaller batch of classified documents found in biden's offices versus what we're talking about that was seized at mar-a-lago.
