오래전에 머라이어 케리와 휘트니 휴스턴의 라이벌 구도에 대해 칼럼을 쓴 적이 있다. 아하와 듀란듀란, 백스트리트 보이스와 엔싱크 등의 이름도 떠오르겠지만 솔로 여자 가수로 분야를 한정한다면 길고 긴 팝 역사상 그들만큼 막상막하의 대결이 또 있었을까 싶다. 1980년대부터 시작된 머라이어 케리와 휘트니 휴스턴의 전성기가 지나가고 20세기가 끝나갈 즈음이었다. 마치 미리 준비하고 있었던 양 새로운 디바 두명이 우리 앞에 짜잔 나타난다. 브리트니 스피어스와 크리스티나 아길레라. 오늘은 그중에서 브리트니 스피어스에 대해 이야기해보려 한다.
브리트니 스피어스라는 이름을 들으면 어떤 생각이 먼저 드는지? 그는 20년도 넘는 활동기간 내내 너무나도 다양하면서 강렬한 인상으로 소비되었기에 어떤 시기에 그를 접했는지에 따라 인상이 다를 수밖에 없다. 우리로 치면 아역 배우로 활동한 시기는 생략하도록 하고,

최고의 가수 자리에서 내려올 줄 모르던 그가 갑자기 추락하게 된 계기는 결혼이었다. 결혼이 무슨 죄냐. 누구랑 결혼하느냐가 문제지. 그가 남편으로 선택한 남자는 황당하게도 이미 다른 여자와 아이까지 낳고 사는 백댄서였다. 심지어 브리트니 스피어스와 결혼할 당시에도 그의 아내는 또 다른 아이를 임신 중이었다. 나를 비롯한 브리트니 스피어스 팬들의 충격은 상상을 초월했고 그 뒤로 몸과 정신 모두 망가져가는 그를 보며 트라우마가 생길 지경이었다. 한동안 그의 노래를 차마 못 듣고 방송에서 내보내지도 못했던 기억이 생생하다. 그를 만나면 꼭 물어보고 싶었다. 이러려고 그렇게 빛났던 겁니까?
