Jason Lee Middle School in Tacoma is one step closer to changing its name.
Tacoma Public Schools Superintendent Carla Santorno recommended to the district’s Board of Directors on Thursday a new name for Tacoma’s Jason Lee Middle School: Hilltop Heritage Middle School.
The school, which enrolls around 600 students, has been undergoing a name-change process since last summer, after people wrote to school leaders asking for a change. They cited a history of cultural genocide and abuse of indigenous people by the man the school was named for.

Feb. 21—Jason Lee Middle School in Tacoma is on track to get a new name.
The Tacoma Public Schools Board of Directors heard the two final suggestions at a study session Thursday evening.
The two names under consideration are:
1.
šeqalič Middle School (pronounced shuh-kah-leech)
The names were recommended by a renaming committee made up of students, staff, alumni, members of the Puyallup Tribe and parents.
Hilltop Heritage would reflect the area's "rich and unique history that speaks to the diversity and inclusiveness of people from various backgrounds," according to Thursday's presentation.

The Tacoma Public Schools will consider renaming the school after local civic leader Dolores Silas.

TACOMA, Wash. — Tacoma is one step closer to changing the name of Woodrow Wilson High School – after several alumni sent letters to the principal pointing out the former president’s racist ties.
The superintendent says naming the school after local trailblazer Dolores Silas is the best option.
Last week, Superintendent Carla Santorno formally recommended to the Tacoma School Board that Wilson High School should instead bear the name of Silas, a local education and racial equity trailblazer.

Teachers and other school staff returning to in-person school in Washington state could be eligible for a COVID-19 vaccine earlier than expected.
Changes to the state Department of Health vaccination plan by Gov. Jay Inslee on Monday moved the state into Phase 1B of the plan, allowing everyone over the age of 65 to receive the vaccine.
The changes also created flexibility for providers administering the vaccine starting in Phase 1B Tier 2. Prior to the changes, only teachers 50 and older were eligible to receive the vaccine, and all other teachers had to wait until Tier 4. Now, providers can combine Tiers 2 and 4, making all school staff eligible for the vaccine regardless of age.
