KUALA LUMPUR (Jan 19): The main index at Bursa Malaysia pared some of its gains at the midday break Tuesday as broader market sentiment appeared lukewarm to the government’s RM15 billion Perlindungan Ekonomi dan Rakyat Malaysia (Permai) assistance package. At 12.30pm, the FBM KLCI was up 2.78 points to 1,612.30. The index had earlier climbed to a high of 1,618.41. Declining issuers led advancers by 370 to 365, while 728 counters traded unchanged. Trading volume was 4.16 billion shares valued at RM2.50 billion. The gainers included Nestle (M) Bhd, Toyo Ventures Holdings Bhd, Milux Corp Bhd, PMB Technology Bhd, Khind Bhd, Samaiden Group Bhd and Carlsberg Brewery Malaysia Bhd. ....
TOTAL logistics solution provider Tasco Bhd was on the lookout for a partner in the last-mile logistics market and found it in GD Express Carrier Bhd (GDEX). Together, they will now look for ways to share resources and jointly bid for projects that will tap the capabilities of both companies, says Tasco deputy group CEO Tan Kim Yong. He notes that Tasco has no intention at the moment to enter the last-mile logistics market, given the competitive landscape. “We have been clear that we think working with existing [express delivery] players such as GDEX would be the best way,” Tan tells The Edge. The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission recently announced a two-year freeze on the issuance of new courier service licences in an already-crowded market with more than 110 players. ....

The combined segment reported a loss of RM45.7 million in the half year ended June 30. – The Edge Kuala Lumpur: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission’s (MCMC) decision to freeze the issuance of new licences for courier services for two years will provide the crowded field with some respite, although competition will remain extremely stiff. The freeze, effective Sept 14, has been lauded by local industry players, which are concerned about the existence of too many courier service companies, especially given the influx of foreign-owned ones. ....
