Dynamics of Caste and Landlessness : A Missing Perspective in Urban Development

The effects of land acquisition processes and poor urban planning on Dalits and the marginalised landless population are analysed. How minor changes in laws and policymaking processes can change or prevent future policy issues by addressing landlessness-borne issues in consistency with sustainable development goals and social inclusion is examined. This study aims to understand the complexities and transitory socio-economic problems underlying urban development planning. It finds that poor and marginal landless village residents, who had little to no idea about the land acquired for a public purpose, undoubtedly faced the most unfavourable outcomes in the course of rural to urban development. ....

Reflections on the 'Chalo Nagpur' Campaign | Economic and Political Weekly

The ‘Chalo Nagpur’ campaign mobilised thousands of women marchers and drew attention to not only the exploitation and violence suffered by women from the lower castes, classes and marginalised sections but also their efforts to build connections with women engaged in similar aims across the world.
The city of Nagpur in Maharashtra has a special significance in the Ambedkarite social consciousness it is the site of the mass historic struggle for reclaiming the Buddhist tradition, symbolised by Deeksha Bhoomi. Nagpur also symbolises both the wound of a massacre (the brutal, collective murders of four members of the Bhotmange family in Khairlanji) and the mass resistance against it. So when women rooted in the Phule–Ambedkarite ideology decided to take out a march on the 110th death anniversary of the pioneering reformer Savitribai Phule on 10 March 2017, Nagpur was the chosen destination. Thousands marched to protest the increasing violence against women from marginalised ....

National Education Policy 2020 : Realigning the Bhadralok

Even as the National Education Policy, 2020 talks of accessibility, there are too many visions in the document that would not allow that. It seeks to build skills for traditional vocations and for the global market. This is structured with a vision that deepens the inequalities of caste, class and gender by focusing on two types of citizens. With no vision to sustain the environment, tribal education is also weakened. Accessibility is deeply associated with nature of knowledge. With the predominance of skills, the heavy base on Hindutva, and a lightness of curriculum that is yet to be defined, the NEP cannot enhance the right of citizens to know, to critically reflect and to shape the world. ....

Politics of Caste-based Schemes

In the past month, the B S Yediyurappa government in Karnataka announced two schemes for Brahmin brides, to be implemented through the Brahmin Development Board instituted by the government in July 2020. One is the Arundhati scheme, under which a payment of `25,000 each will be made for the marriage of 550 Brahmin brides who are economically weak, and the other is the Maitreyi scheme, under which the payment of `3 lakh (spread over three years) will be made to 25 Brahmin women who marry Brahmin priests from an economically weaker background. The Arundhati scheme has parallels with earlier schemes introduced by the Congress to support brides of the minority community who are economically weak. It is the Maitreyi scheme that raises concerns. There is no doubt that there is a crisis in the priestly community among the Brahmins. There are many cases of poor priest families among Brahmins. The question is not whether they should be supported, but who should take the responsi ....
