New study calls for fishing restrictions in some areas of European seas SHARES in Frontiers in Marine Science has provided an evaluation of which regions of southern European seas are in the most need of fishing restrictions. According to the study, these areas have persistently shown high numbers of undersized fish and crustaceans, which are typically discarded because they are below the allowable size limit for collection. These findings may offer a strategy for prioritising conservation efforts and ensuring more sustainable fishery management in the future. “Natural fish populations need time to reproduce and recover from fishing impacts – this is the only way to achieve a balance between natural resources and human exploitation,” said lead author Dr Giacomo Milisenda, of the Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn di Napoli in Italy.
Mapping of undersized fish, crustaceans may help sustainable fishing efforts By (0) Maps showing the proportion of fish caught commercially that are smaller than legal minimums -- clockwise from upper left, the maps show European hake, Atlantic horse mackeral, deep-water pink shrimp and a cross-section of species -- could help fishers be more selective, researchers say. Milisenda and coathors/Frontiers in Marine Science Feb. 5 (UPI) -- By mapping where undersized fish and crustaceans are congregated, researchers hope to help fisheries managers better protect vulnerable fish and crustacean stocks. In a paper, published Friday in the journal Frontiers in Marine Science, researchers pinpointed a variety of hotspots for undersized fish and crustaceans in southern European seas -- areas where stronger fishing restrictions are warranted.
